Cave Story remake coming to 3DS

If you haven’t gotten enough Cave Story from the original PC version, the WiiWare port, and the recent DSiWare release, Nicalis has another project in the works for the revered indie game: a new 2.5D remake for the 3DS!

Nicalis and Cave Story creator Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya have teamed up with NIS America to release a new version of the game with 3D graphics (though still presented as a side-scrolling, Metroidvania-type game), stereoscopic 3D effects, remixed music by a mystery composer, and some new content this summer.

Tyrone Rodriguez from Nicalis explains:

“Primarily, this is based off of the original game. In a way, it’s almost like a true 3D remake from scratch.

So we’ve added a couple of things that Daisuke and I have gone over, as far as some secrets and some Easter eggs that are going to make some of the original fans really happy, and it’ll also add some longevity for the game for anybody who’s playing it, and sees these grand new areas that we’re adding, as well.”

Here’s an idea of how Cave Story’s environments will be transformed for the 3DS. Original starting area:

Unlike the previous remakes Nicalis has put out, this version will be a boxed/retail release, hence the publishing agreement with NISA. I’m presuming it will also have the original 2D version of Cave Story packed in there.

Oh, and in an interview with GamesRadar (where all the artwork I’ve posted so far has come from) Daisuke Amaya actually hinted at a Cave Story sequel!:

“I wanted to create a few other games on the side, which I was able to in the past few years. So I’m satisfied with that. It’s now been 10 years since the original Cave Story came out, so I’m now thinking that maybe it’s time to start thinking about a sequel for Cave Story. There’s a very, very good chance we’ll see a sequel.”

He also chatted a little with GameSpot, which posted video of Quote/Balrog in 3D and in motion (skip to 2:30):

Sooooo, your thoughts?
