A loss like that leaves a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. Everyone on the BT Staff is still pretty upset — ok, maybe livid — at Sunday’s affair. So, it’s not surprising that they all picked duds. I went out of my way to try and highlight a few positives, but it wasn’t easy. These Broncos were supposed to be better than this…. Take it away gentlemen.

Dud: Offensive line.
The complete offensive line. We were beat at the point of attack all day and couldn’t gain 5 yards when we needed it the most. I do agree Knowshon Moreno is not a bruising red zone guy, but the o-line has to do a better job of giving him something to work with. When 9 points should’ve been 21, it’s easy to see why we lost this game. I was surprised to hear last night in an interview with Dave Logan that Josh McDaniels said they used all zone blocking against the Raiders. So it’s not like we were playing to our line’s weaknesses, this is what they’re good at. They just didn’t get the job done at all. – Josh Temple

Dud: The entire effing team.
This is unconscionable. We lost to the Raiders. At home. To JaMarcus The Hutt. The team simply didn’t have the passion when they went out on the field. They managed to get a little bit fired up, but by then the domination had begun and the Raiders were there to beat their rival. The Broncos came in looking like they remembered pantsing the Raiders and expected to do it again. Losing to the Raiders the way they did, I don’t believe this team deserves to go to the playoffs. Playoffs have to be earned every game, but especially in the important games. They didn’t earn it. – E. Halsey Miles

Tony CarterStud: Tony Carter.
Carter was signed from the practice squad the day before the game. An undrafted rookie out of Florida State, Carter is small even by DB’s standards, tipping the scales at 5’9″, 175 lbs. Youth, size, and inexperience didn’t matter — Carter made the most of his opportunity. With Ty Law out due to injury, he trumped Alphonso Smith as nickelback, for whom the Broncos traded a first round pick in the 2008, and finished with one tackle, an impressive pass defensed, a fumble recovery and a special-teams tackle. He was hurt in the fourth quarter, and his replacement later in the game (Smith) half-assed the tackle on Schilens pictured above that led to the Raiders win. Get well soon, kid. – Kyle

Wesley WoodyardDud: Wesley Woodyard.
Woodyard deserves to get cut after these last two games. Last week Woody left Dallas Clark wide open for three touchdowns, this week he gave Oakland a fresh set of downs to win the game. I’m so livid right now I could give out about several duds, but I have to leave some for the rest of the BT crew because there’s not a lot of studs to pick from this game. It’s going to be a tough assignment to travel to Philly to find a win next week. If Denver has another game like that they won’t see a playoff berth. At least Chicago lost and Cutler threw three picks. – Mr. East

Eddie RoyalDud: Eddie Royal.
Not too sure what it is this season. There has been a lot of speculation. It boils down to the fact that Eddie just isn’t getting it done. Maybe it’s not his fault with a lack of targets. Maybe he’s no longer flying under the radar like his rookie season. Whatever the case may be, one thing can be certain, he isn’t helping this team. – J. Kenneth K.

Brandon MarshallSomewhere in between: Brandon Marshall
For 59 minutes, when the Broncos were on offense, Brandon Marshall was a stud. That’s not a surprise — he’s Brandon Marshall. But Orton threw to him at the end of the game with seconds left. It was a perfect throw. Michael Huff laid him out, to be certain, but if Marshall holds onto that football, Orton has a chance to run up and spike it, throw a 20-yarder at the sidelines, and let Matt Prater do his thing. Marshall, you’re undoubtedly on the cusp of the most lucrative contract in NFL wide receiver history. The highest-paid wideout of all time is expected to make that catch. – Kyle

Robert AyersDud: Robert Ayers
The first touchdown he allowed by RB Michael Bush was beyond pathetic. Just an ounce of hustle would have been a stop. These rookies are letting us down. – Kyle

There were also a couple of defensive guys that were near-studs, like Brian Dawkins, Champ Bailey, David Bruton (thanks broncogeoff81 in the comments), and D.J. Williams, but no starter gets such an honor for the pathetic overall effort on run defense.

Can we start an official “Where is Peyton Hillis” blog? Seriously, LaMont Jordan over him??? If the guy is sucking it up in practice, if for whatever reason his head just isn't in the game then so be it, I can live with that as an excuse. No stories revolving around that has come out though so WHY does McD refuse to get him in the game? This is getting extremely ridiculous. While I don't always like the coaching decisions made, I usually at least understand the thinking behind the processes which makes it understandable. This… This just pisses me off.

  • broncogeoff81

I would like to say you'd have to put David Bruton up there with the guys
that were “near studs”. He was all over the place, especially on that goal line stand. He was very impressive filling in for Renaldo Hill for most of the game.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

    I agree, good call.

  • anthony33

Agreed… you would have to call this draft class, albeit too early to pass final judgment, a bust.

    Moreno – average
    Ayers – lost
Smith – already well pointed out above
    Mcbbath – shows promise
Quinn – is he still on the team?
    Bruton – good special teams
    Olsen – ???
    McKinley – too early
Brandstater – still inactive… and Simms sucks… that ought to tell you something
    Schluter – ???

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

On Nov. 13, I think we already answered that – http://broncotalk.net/2009/11/11645/broncos-blo

Wesley Woodyard is killing us — what has happened to this kid? He was a beast last season and I was screaming for him to start over DJ. He is at his best when he can run through these tackles — whoever is coaching him is not playing to his strengths….he is not a methodical football player….he is a smash mouth player….and against INDY — why didn't we double-team the TE the entire game? I still do not understand why that wasn't a pivotal part to Denver’s Defensive game plan from the jump. Also, can our D start running to the spot????? You guys are all completely correct; Denver does not deserve to go to the playoffs. When we as fans, have more passion then those 53 guys on the field something is wrong…..At this point, Denver has to show me something!!!!

  • http://broncomadness.com Garrett Barnes

I disagree with Moreno being average.

Most rookies, especially running backs, wear down towards the end of their first NFL season because they don't have the experience to deal with the stress (both physical and mental). It happens to most.

Moreno still probably will succeed, he just needs time.

  • Mr T

The Raiders just have a better team than us. It wasn't anyones fault. We got beat in every phase of the game.

  • milelow

Okay I i got mad when we loss to the crapy raiders. The Broncos are a new team and I think for still having a chance to be in the playoffs at this time in the sosone thats good. They did loose to 3 back up qbs.
BRONCOS REALY NEED TO GET RID OF SCARED LITTLE BTCH KYEL THE FALL DOWN ORTEN.

  • Red Dawg

    Snake bit,

Ever since we got rid of Jake Plummer it seems as though the Broncos have been cursed as they have found inexplicable ways to lose late season games to bad football teams. Now we made some strides during the off season in trading away and firing the roots of the curse (Jay Cutler and Mike Shanahan) and bringing in a very Jake-like quarter back in Orton. Now it seems that the football gods are still out to get us, so I recommend that all Broncos fans go out and play hand ball this week and that Kyle Orton grow some facial hair in effigy. We must reverse the Curse of the Snake.

You can't assess a player as lost in his first year, especially a guy like Ayers. Yeah, every once in a while you're going to get a guy who comes in and cleans house his rookies year, but more often that is not the case. Look at him his third year, that is when we see what he is going to be.

  • anthony33

Agree. That what's I prefaced my comments with. However, right now Ayers
    looks completely lost out there.

    Garrett,
I respect your opinion. Moreno is decent enough, I just don't think he is
special. He is good at a lot of things, but when you look at the 4-5
things that make running backs great, Moreno does not stand out in any of them.
Breakaway speed, quickness, power, instincts and heart. He has decent
speed, quickness and heart, but not great at any of them.

Take a guy like Terrell Davis… he had GREAT speed, power, instincts and
    heart… which equals HOF material.

Hey, I hope your are right and he develops into a stud. I am a 50 year
Bronco fan and would be thrilled to death to see him turn out great… right
now I'm not seeing it. I'll admit that I don't see enough through watching
the games on TV if it's him, the offensive line, the play calling or a
    combination of all three.

    Happy Holidays.

The article makes a great case for playing Hillis but doesn't answer why he is not being played unless I am simply missing that section.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

No one knows, that's the thing. DPO have close to 10 writers on the Broncos… someone's gotta find something out.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

    Are you serious?

  • RAIDER FAN

I love reading all this !!!! LMAO

  • Nugs

Amidst all the duds on defense that last drive, Vonnie Holliday deserves credit. He has created a lot of pressure for us this season without playing a whole lot of snaps and was definitely getting to Russell more than his fair share despite the ultimate outcome.

By all means, laugh as much as you can right now. Your opportunities to laugh are few and far between. At least we get to laugh every time Al Davis makes a move.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/2BAYIAO43HDNCFTNPFJ6RCS56Y Punisher

How can no one have given McD a dud so far? I have been very impressed with him so far but it seems like at least 95% of the 1st downs were runs for 1 yard, no gain or a loss. Have you ever heard of Play Action McD? Also have to give the refs a dud. I mean we did not deserve to win the game but Schef was blatantly interfered with on the last drive forcing the FG.

  • RAIDER FAN

nevermind Al.. the Raiders are on the upswing next year and you guys know it.. We won't be wasting half of next season on Jabustus either.. We have tons of talent !! Prepare to be swept by the silver and black for the next few years !! Your future looks bleak ….God, Bush looked like a monster running through that D line !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • RAIDER FAN

nice grammar Bronco fan !!! Can u play QB next week ?? They need you !!

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/2BAYIAO43HDNCFTNPFJ6RCS56Y Punisher

Thanks, man! I needed that. Nothing gives me a good chuckle like a delusional Raider fan. Can I have some of whatever you are smoking?

  • RAIDER FAN

nothing delusional about Bush shredding the D… and yes, we are smoking orange krush out here in Oaksterdam thank you very much !!

    That was rough to watch.
