The town of Ogunquit is offering a program to make sure vacant homes and businesses don’t become victims of burglars and the cold during the winter.Patrolman Tony Dumont of the Ogunquit Police Department conducted an inspection of a local bed and breakfast on Tuesday.Freezing point of common household itemsThe innkeepers spend the winter in Florida and have signed up for the free program where officers check the property several times a day."A normal passer-by will come by and they'll see water in the street or the chimneys will be black smoke coming out, just doesn't look right, and we'll got in and eventually we'll get in and it's a major catastrophe, tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage," said Dumont.Dumont said they check for open windows and doors, which can lead to broken water pipes.They are also checking to make sure the homes and businesses haven't been burglarized."Even when the doors are locked and I'm looking in the windows. I'm looking for open drawers or knocked over chairs or something out of the ordinary there," said Dumont.The program can save property owners thousands of dollars in the long run, if a situation arises without anyone knowing there is a problem.Between 50 and 100 property owners have signed up for the service.Ogunquit is a resort town where many residents spend a significant amount of time away from their homes and businesses during the winter months, Dumont said.
