Book Challenge Gets Young Children Excited about Reading

Four young readers complete the 1,000 Books Project.

The 1,000 Books Project’s goal of sparking a love of reading at an early age was successful four times over this year, with children between the ages of 2 (almost 3) and 5 reaching the monumental milestone of reading 1,000 books.

The Ossining Staff Development Center honored Ayun Roh, 4; Benjamin Kotsubey, 3; and sisters Emily Marts, 5; and Laura Marts, 2, for completing the 1,000 Books Project. Ayun attends Little School, a half-day program for preschoolers.

Each child received a book, shirt and award certificate for completing the challenge. The Ossining Staff Development Center honored the children May 16.

The 1,000 Books Project was created in 2004 to encourage children from birth to 6 to get excited about reading and acquire the skills they need to be successful. The Ossining Staff Development Center and the Ossining Public Library developed the program.
