Fun Friday: How Will You Watch Monday's Presidential Debate

I am super excited to watch the Presidential Debates on Twitter. I wrote this yesterday afternoon:

I know the Bloomberg Politics team. John Heilemann is a good friend of mine. They have two excellent TV shows, With All Due Respect which runs on Bloomberg TV every day after the market closes, and The Circus on Showtime on Sunday Nights. They understand this presidential race as well as anyone, they know the candidates, the issues, the campaigns, the pundits, and the people as well as anyone. I am really looking forward to how they do “Twitter play by play” during the debate.

So I tweeted out this poll today.

How do you plan to watch the debate?

As an African, I’ll watch it vicariously through this blog, and look forward to the comments section exploding 🙂

    1. Anne Libby

      As it does, lol.

  2. Anne Libby

I’ve “watched” several of the debates on Twitter, without TV. I’m game to go all in.

  3. William Mougayar

How about on both, TV & Twitter? In light of last week’s NFL post, watching on 2 streams seems to be the hip thing to do. Watching on just one screen is so 2015.

    1. fredwilson

Watching on one screen that has both is so 2017

      1. William Mougayar

        Yup!

        1. pointsnfigures

          Erie Cafe perhaps for us.

  4. andyswan

The only problem I have with watching it on Twitter is that you don’t get to see CNN commentator melt downs.

    1. LE

If Trump were to win it would be the best thing for the media. Would lead to years of record profits. They will get practically a daily dose of interesting things to discuss and chew to pieces. It would also be great for Fred’s long position in twitter.Edit: Just read that twitter shares up 20% on takeover report.http://www.wsj.com/articles

    2. pointsnfigures

Lester Holt can’t cutaway if Trump’s hair goes askew, or if Hillary gets into a coughing fit.

      1. sigmaalgebra

Ah, this time Hillary may be wearing three layers of Depends!

    3. David Semeria

It would be fun if there wasn’t so much at stake…With its might, the USA can do much good in the world. But the reverse is also true.

      1. andyswan

        We will

        1. David Semeria

          We will what?

          1. andyswan

            Do much good as always

      2. sigmaalgebra

Yup.We have a way to go to make up for LBJ and Nixon in Viet Nam.Now, remind me: Just what was it that was so important there? I mean, because Ho got some free lunches in Moscow and Peking, dominoes were going to fall all across the Pacific and land on the beaches of San Diego? That was the danger? And what about W, Cheney, Rummy, and Wolfowitz and Gulf War II?Yes, Cheney gave a speech and said that there was “no doubt” that Saddam had WMDs. Well maybe Cheney was correct: Maybe Saddam had some chemical weapons? How did Cheney know? Because someone showed Cheney the receipts from when we sold those chemicals to Saddam intending that he would use them against Iranians? But Cheney, Condi, Powell, W, etc. were convinced that any day Saddam would have nukes. After all, as Condi told us, Saddam had aluminum tubes! And Condi said that they were for uranium separation. And IIRC Powell told the UN the same. But IIRC the US Department of Energy, who knows some things about uranium separation, that the tubes were not useful for uranium separation. Then a news report talked to an Iraqi who showed that he used to tubes as the bodies of DIY rockets. When a US General said that it would take 600,000 or so US soldiers to occupy Iraq, Wolfowitz said that it was absurd or some such to expect that it would take more troops to occupy Iraq than to defeat its military — from military expert Wolfowitz in his little office at the Hopkins SAIS — and “wide of the mark”. And W thought that “The Iraqi people are perfectly capable of governing themselves.” Lots of blood, treasure, and years later, maybe we know better?

        is that so??

  6. Rob Underwood

As an HRC supporter, I plan to watch it much as I did last night’s Patriots game. I will turn on the Twitter stream with a deep sense of trepidation after a couple weeks of unexpected injuries and set backs. And I hope at the end of the evening to be cheering the metaphorical equivalent of a 27-0 blowout.

From Switzerland – I guess we may see a big trans-antlatic plume of toxic fall-out played out on the world stage over years rather than minutes.Whether the low-water mark of these debates is xenophobia, racism, corruption, braggardly behaviour or misogeny, there will be international trade, defense and cultural consequences. The recent trend for killing own citizens, together with an emasculated justice system, that also trades one crime for another with plea-bargaining for political gains is a symptom of a more broken culture but is the mere tip of an iceberg.A culture where many of the populus : expects to be lied to and rewards liars, rejects; due process, rights to defense and promotes torture and false imprisonment and frankly espouses unashamedly validity of either bombing the shit out of people “I dont like today” at a national level, or more locally shooting the shit out of them with rights to carry in the classroom , are simply an extrapolation from that rotten core. The world does not want the (worst of the) US to be the standard for policing (individuals or societies) and should not. However, In the past the US has brought some of the best of enlightened policy to the world. I wonder if a reset of some older beneficent values may be possible.Walls (physical or cultural) will be built – sadly for the US, much of the rest of the world are beginning to wonder if it would be better if the US would wall itself in.These things may at first be reduced to twitter #Hashtags – but these things will matter in the longer term{Edit because I am not anti:USA – but am anti some recent US trends which are not universal]

    1. JLM

.Who pissed in your cornflakes, James? The US used to have a nice convention that we never criticized our President when he was overseas and he, in turn, didn’t speak of domestic politics whilst abroad. That is now long since over having been wrecked irretrievably by The. Worst. President. Ever. One other convention is that we Americans close ranks when foreigners criticize our leaders or system. You have crossed that line, mate.Much of what you say is both offensive and out of proportion. The Internet and the media, in general, are able to make big news of minute matters. The US still continues to be the best hope for all of mankind. Even on our worst day, we are still mankind’s best friend. The Swiss, on the other hand, were one step removed from being actual Nazis though they did manage to steal substantial Jewish assets with the Nazis, bank the Nazis and the Nazi war machine, allow safe passage of Nazi trains enroute to Italy, hold Nazi dental gold and stolen artwork, hold sovereign nation gold (the stolen fruit of the poisoned tree) all while providing the Nazis R & R and hospital facilities under the guise of Swiss “neutrality.”From there, they made tax evasion their core value superior to chocolate and gnomes. One other rule, pal. If you’re going to use a fancy word to criticize us, you have to spell it correctly.M-I-S-O-G-Y-N-YI don’t care if you protest you’re anti-US or not. Your words establish what you are.Have a great weekend.[Now, you know I’m just pissing on your leg and telling you it’s raining, right? You’re not that sensitive nor am I.]JLMwww.themusingsofthebigredca…

I disagree with you and dislike how you treat an AVC regular. Sorry JLM your vitriol is unimpressive and unbecoming.

        1. JLM

.If you disagree, Russell, then I must have some facts wrong, do tell which ones?As to vitriol — guilty as charged.I like the smell of vitriol (cruel and bitter criticism by definition) in the morning, particularly when one attacks my beloved country.I’m funny like that.JLMwww.themusingsofthebigredca…

          1. Lawrence Brass

You look funny in your deplorable suit, Sir.

          2. JLM

.I am deplorable. Feel quite comfortable so. In the musketry between the elites and the deplorables, I will be firing and reloading with the deplorables. About time they got their piece of the pie.My comfort is only exceeded by my simplicity. I am a simpleton, in even the unkindest slant of the word.My simplicity is only exceeded by my luck, having been born on Ash Wednesday to an Irish mother in a snowstorm.JLMwww.themusingsofthebigredca…

          3. cavepainting

JLM, With all due respect, you are no deplorable. Neither is Trump and most of our politicians. It has become a convenient talking point to make a distinction between elites and the not so, but do the people claiming to support the deplorables really understand what it means to be so?Do they understand what it means to raise a family without a good job and a steady paycheck ?Do they understand what it means to live without medical insurance, and in a constant state of fear that something may happen that will wipe you out and land you in bankruptcy ?Do they understand what it means to be born and raised poor, and stuck in survival mode for most part of their lives ?Or do they understand what it means to be a single Mom raising two kids with three jobs ?May be you do, but I am sure the vast majority of the politicians do not.It is not a question of being elite or not. It is about having enough empathy to appreciate the experience of someone unlike you living a very different life that you have no idea of.

          4. Lawrence Brass

You are not, you are wearing a suit or perhaps an uniform, you are committed on a mission. On campaign. As I said, I will be there for you. I will slide pizza under the door of your deplorable safe place, until you heal. 😛

      2. James Ferguson @kWIQly

I agree with you in some respects more than you agree with yourself – to quote an oft wise man.The Swiss had a bad war record – whereas the US had a great one (WWII)However – turning schools. villages and malls into shooting galleries is new and not the Good ol’ US of A at its best. Nobody disputes this,Equally completely unaccountable politicians are a recipe for disaster wherever they are from (and there have been a few – globally). If, further the media is motivated by salacious (probably spelled wrong but who cares) appeal rather than journalism – the result is clear – The gits win time and time again. My vote – Foreign ministers stand down if country goes to war. (they used to)Politicians to be self-made and do it as civic service out of a sense of duty and pride rather than as a career choice. (EG Isambard Kingdom Brunel)So – the only difference isyou are describing how it was I am noting where its going – and my friend the direction is clear.American public office and international reputation is already so far past the U-bend that many a wise young person might question whether standing to salute a flag – one that in the past has done GREAT service to its owners (an erstwhile republic -not democracy) is a statement – or is now merely a great news moment. (That is the nature of eroding markedly good values)Cut the commentary to zero, ignore the protests of the people and eventually the people will put round up a popular reactionary hero. We can name them and it does not end well.It has always been so – and in the US it has never before looked more so since the Amercan Civil War (Vietnam got interesting in the civil disobedience respect) . -So I like you guys but I think you are ripping yourselves apart and that it needs to stop.If you think that view is anti-American I would have to revise my respect for your often inciteful discourse.Disagree ? @JLM:disqus

        1. JLM

.A lot of grist for the mill.I am universally and totally disappointed at the quality of leadership from the Travis County Republican Party Executive Committee (upon which I sit) to the office of the President of the US and both candidates.I do not accept that this is an impending long-term result without a long term opportunity to right the ship. What is happening right now is how modern revolutions are going to be undertaken. No muskets, ballots. The GOPe/DEMe is being thrown to the ash heap of history. The 2014 election in which the Republicans swept the Senate, gained an even bigger majority in the House, conquered Statehouses and Gov Mansions will re-assert itself in this election. Of that, I am confident.Whether DJT is up to the task is the essential risk of this election. I may have a tiny bit of an insight as I know how complex it is to build 100-story buildings and I think he’s more than sufficiently intellectually gifted to do the job.In the delicate balance between his bombast and his talent is a track record of getting stuff done. The saga of Woolman Skating Rink, while a small thing, is illuminating.http://themusingsofthebigre…If he gets elected — a lot of that “if” will be answered on Monday — he will have at least a two year honeymoon with the Congress. Thereafter, he will have to earn every minute. The US desperately needs term limits. The entrenchment of both parties is at the root of an inability to effect useful and timely change. Politicians of both parties become mesmerized by the money and the lobbyists rent them like Tijuana ladies of the night. We are held hostage to our current leadership, which is not very good. The riots in Charlotte (where my son lives and which I know intimately) are a perfect example. The ill-advised White House suggests that thugs, looters, rioters, violent attackers have a “legitimate” right to their views. This is nonsense. It is not a “view” to torch a police car or to beat up a white man in a parking garage. [Though I do like the idea that the Ritz Carlton is at the center of things.]There is a continuous need for improvement in every endeavor — whether business, tech, the priesthood, the military, law enforcement — but the suggestion that rioting, mayhem, violence, looting are legitimate ways to express those concerns is madness. The divide in the US between the deplorables and the elites is at an all time high. I have a foot in each camp and I prefer the deplorables.JLMwww.themusingsofthebigredca…

          1. Lawrence Brass

I am a bit concerned about the situation after the elections, as the polarization is so high, there will be almost 50% of US voters very pissed off.

          2. JLM

.Nobody really ever bothers to understand the electorate. Here are the real numbers.https://uploads.disquscdn.c…As you can see, the actual turnout as a percentage of the population of the United States is very small.Figure we should see something short of 45% turnout. That means that, potentially, only 22% of the population did not vote for the winner. This is a very small percentage though it is, comparatively, a lot of “registered” voters. As to registered voters, only 60% of registered voters will actually vote and only half of them will be disappointed. Again, a small number, 30%.The statistical basis for suggesting that there is a total polarization in the US after a Presidential election is simply not true when you put a pencil to it.In the political/chattering/pundit class? Yes. In the population in general? No.The other thing is that Americans accept the outcome as long as it is fairly constructed and arrived at. I completely accepted the first Obama victory. I, frankly, had high hopes for him. I wanted him to make racism go away in America. Instead, he made it worse.I never was enthralled by McCain and there is clearly an undercurrent of support for the First Black President. We Americans took pride in what it meant for our society.Let me tell you something about trade school grads (McCain went to Annapolis. I went to VMI. Both trade (military) schools.).If you graduated at the top of your class, you do not have much respect for the Goat (bottom grads). I was #1 in my class. I abhor the Goat. McCain was a Goat. The political class has an investment in pretending they represent the entire country. The balance of the country will go right back to sleep as soon as the election is over. They will be watching their paychecks, their kids, the cost of their healthcare. If the next President delivers, they will be there for 8 years.JLMwww.themusingsofthebigredca…

          3. Lawrence Brass

Interesting. At first I was going to say that that was a fairly good turnout, but then checked the OECD. It happens that in Chile we have lower turnouts than the US, that I am familiar with. We are in a deep credibility crisis right now and with a high probability to swing to the right next year.https://uploads.disquscdn.c…Ref: http://www.pewresearch.org/…Do you think polarization might increase voter turnout?A ‘stop Trump anti-vote’ is fairly probable in my opinion.

          4. JLM

.We have some data already. The Trump primary vote was the highest on record. It is difficult to motivate a voter to vote “against” a person. Usually, they just don’t vote.HRC suffers from an enthusiasm gap. Nobody really likes her.DJT has big “unfavorables” but people are enthusiastic in their support.I suspect DJT actually receives 5% more votes than he polls. We shall see.JLMwww.themusingsofthebigredca…

          5. cavepainting

JLM, Trump makes people hate him as much as like him so we are going to have a high voter turnout. If millennials, women, hispanics, college educated whites and blacks turn out as expected, she should win the race comfortably. The election is really hers to lose unless he really breaks through in the next 45 days with groups he has really not been able to make a dent in.I could be wrong but I hope I am not.

          6. JLM

.I often wonder where people develop their opinions. Facts are often a good starting point. As an Election Judge, I got to watch my Precinct vote in the primaries and I can tell you a couple of interesting things:1. Every voter between 7:00 AM and 8:30 AM was a Republican. Every. Single. One. Mine is a district with lots of doctors, lawyers, venture capitalists, and Indian chiefs, so this is pretty damn interesting.Early voting was huge also. Big indicator of enthusiasm.2. Republican turnout (joint primary with Republicans and Democrats voting at the same polling points) was at record levels while Democrat turnout was less, substantially less, than either Obama election. The People’s Republic of Austin is quite liberal and if there were to be a barometer of Dem turnout, this is where it would be calibrated. Pffffffft!Gary Mauro, HRC’s state guy and a “friend” of mine (our kids went to school together) said the same thing.Clearly, HRC is not gaining traction with millennials. That does not mean that Trump is but simply that she does not have the Obama mojo working for her. No “Hope & Change” mojo. What is her slogan, BTW? Yeah. Me, too.Already, Trump is doing better than his Republican predecessors with African Americans and Hispanics. The real opponent for HRC is voters staying home. Remember that fewer than 60% of registered voters will actually vote, so VOTER APATHY is on the ballot right next to each candidate’s name.Once upon a time the election was to be a coronation but that ship has long since sailed. She, herself, is her worst enemy. It is not flawed policy (though there are plenty of policy differences to argue about) but rather her person which is keeping the crown in the box.She is unlikable. She is not a warm campaigner. She does not have the common touch. She is a grifter (be careful on this as it is a disqualifying failing and one that the public has no sympathy for — the Leona Helmsley “little people” problem). She is dishonest and she is, simultaneously, incompetent. If one had suggested 18 months ago that DJT would be where he is right now, anybody would have laughed. The fact of the matter is he is either ahead, trending toward a lead, competitive, or slightly behind (not substantially) in every single battleground state.Ohio (no thanks to John Kasich but thanks to Rob Portman who looks like he’s headed to a landslide victory), Florida are in the bag. Fingers crossed as I say that but that’s what it looks like. That’s a big load off DJT’s mind.Momentum is on DJT’s side. The ability to put Pres Obama, HRC, WJC, the GOPe, the MSM, the punditry, collectively, on the other side is a blessing. The notion of HRC running for the third Obama term (given the barbed wire enema of the 2014 mid-terms in one’s rear view mirror) is a gift.To suggest that there are groups he has been unable to make a dent in is to simply fail to read the numbers and the tea leaves correctly. Even the most ardent Dem pollster is concerned about the trends. Will he “win” some of these groups? No, of course not. But if he were to simply gain the same Romney penetration (something, he has arguably already surpassed), he wins. There is another spillover fact — when he courts the black vote, he puts the lie to allegations he is a racist which brings white “values” voters into his camp. All the CNN allegations that he’s doing this to attract white voters is correct as it relates to the impact. I leave others to divine his intentions. The debate on Monday night is the inflection point which may give us the clearest view of how this all ends up. There could be a knockout punch administered. DJT is running the low hurdles — just appear Presidential. While HRC is running the high hurdles — overcome the perception she is corrupt, dishonest, incompetent.[When the Director of the FBI says you are “extremely careless” and that you don’t understand email or the classification system, that smell permeates the air well after people stop talking about it. Guess what? The email scandal isn’t going away. It’s getting worse.]I predict that Dem voter turnout is miserable. This is not Barack Obama. He effected the 100-year storm. She doesn’t have the likability to do this.Already the states that offer early voting are seeing trends (albeit very preliminary) that support a turnout model which reflects what happened in the primaries. Higher than normal R turnout. Lower than normal D turnout. You cannot wish these things into existence. There are hard numbers and facts which are immutable and if you know where to look for them, they are there. At this stage of the game, a DJT Presidency is a very real likelihood. If I were Melania, I would not be measuring for new drapes but I would be looking at colors.JLMwww.themusingsofthebigredca…

          7. cavepainting

JLM, please look at the last few national polls. He is substantially behind Romney on Hispanics ( 17 vs 27), blacks ( getting < 3-5 percent ), college educated ( losing by a few points while Romney won them handily). Can he win ? Absolutely. He is winning white male non college graduates by whopping numbers and if they turnout in record numbers, it can compensate for his weakness everywhere else. But you cannot count on it and you also underestimate the feelings against him that are going to increase the anti trump turnoutAlso North Carolina early ballot numbers point to plus 8 increase for the Democrats. It was +5 Republican at the same time in 2012.Too early to predict anything but this is HRC’s election to lose f she does not make any major mistakes.

          8. James Ferguson @kWIQly

Good – Well balanced response – Thanks :)I am glad you have re-framed my initial subjective (but non-partisan) concerns in a way that make sense to you, as my concern is certainly not to attack the US.It is to express concern when billing of the dog and pony show suggests that the outcome best serves the audience if judged by the “loudness of the bark “or the “sweetness of the pony shit”.If noise and stink were all US policy needed then between DT and HC there would be a sure fire winner (for either category). However if it appears to the electorate that noise and stink is sufficient to get elected, with no substance on Policy, little knowledge on issues and untenable positioning regarding international peers, standing in the larger community will be questioned and rightly so.As you say – once elected there will be a honey moon period – but if the noise and stink is not replaced by something of substantial value – there will be greater mayhem both within and without the US.

      3. David Semeria

You’re good value, JLM.And you write with real flair.I often don’t agree with you, but I always appreciate the execution.

Sounds like good sport, but can Trump save Twitter?

    1. LE

As I mentioned in another comment, a Trump win is good for Fred’s long position in twitter.

      1. jason wright

I read that Twitter is about to be the subject of a bidding war. Even better for him.I think the board decided to sell a while back.

        1. Twain Twain

Salesforce is interested.https://uploads.disquscdn.c…@le_on_avc:disqus – Twitter is made for US political debates and elections. But is it made for sales and advertising in the way FB is?

          1. jason wright

It’s ‘made’ for the distribution reach of a Facebook and others. So long as everyone working at T is a power user of the product the product will never devolve in complexity to become accessible to its growth target market, the masses.Power users are playing chess. Twitter needs to become the game of draughts to capture the masses.

          2. Quantella Owens

I often wonder about this: if a product like TWTR exists in a marketplace with a product like the IPhone-where the company has gone out of its’ way to improve the user experience-yet remains wonky and difficult to use, how can they ever expect to gain the market share they claim they are after? Or is it just a case of the tech elite wanting the masses to subsidize their toys and continue the practice of digital exclusion? There are probably a dozen really useful use cases for TWTR, but if it is too hard to use no one will bother. I don’t personally have a sm account of any type because the web still accepts so much hate speech and personal attacks. The selling point of being able to reach any influencer is not a selling point if you are receiving death threats and hate mail for simply being who you are.

  10. oliol

On Facebook. Why is that not an option here?

    1. fredwilson

Because I can’t imagine why anyone would ever want to do that

      1. oliol

When you like me are living in Denmark, facebook is a good option. Similar to broadcast television 🙂

      2. Richard

Twitter should set up sub streams for viewing, such as dem, republ., regional, demographic, topical (economy).

    2. creative group

oliol:The majority of polls are biased. Usually monetary incentives effect decisions. Twitter is the Facebooks (368B Market Cap) little sister by Technology standards, scale and Market Cap. Just a fact if you read independent reviews.Twitter’s market cap is 15B Market Cap. Facebook could just purchase it and make all the investors happy. They would change their tune overnight. Strange how thathappens.

    3. Susan Rubinsky

I will watch on FB too, but will tune in to twitter as the key broadcaster. Very pleased that Bloomberg is partnering on it.

  11. Dave Pinsen

On TV while checking Twitter on my phone for reactions.

  12. Marissa_NYx

It feels like its going to be the battle between Clinton as Bridezilla vs Trump as the Bully. Bridezilla vs the Bully. I’ll be thinking about it like a comedy skitch. Maybe Twitter is the best place to have a rant as the debate unfolds. Beam me there, Scotty.

  13. kenberger

Can’t find a starting time, or link to follow for Monday night, must be missing something obvious(?)

  14. Matt Zagaja

I was impressed with how well the Twitter NFL stream worked last night for the Patriots game. I am likely to watch some sort of live stream at whatever watch party I go to.

  15. Ryan Frew

Not free on Monday, so I’ll watch it Tuesday night on YouTube. Twitter sounds like a nightmare to me, though. This is the last thing I’d want to be in an echo chamber for.

  16. Brandon Kessler

Definitely on Twitter! If they can figure out a sort of ‘magic timeline’ for public events that lets you easily extend beyond your own timeline for one event, then Twitter will finally find its voice. Twitter is the new ‘smart tv.’

  17. kellercl

I’ll be watching on hipster tv since my gen3 Apple TV doesn’t have the twitter app. I do think John Heilemann is a perfect choice. The Circus has been one of my favorite shows of the year. I’ll be watching The Circus on Sunday and then the debate on Monday.

  18. Semil Shah

For debates, I often like radio (so I can do something else, plus these two candidates kind of creep me out), but it’s kind of hard/janky to listen to live radio on the web — everyone uses a different streaming tech, they bug out, etc. So I’ll probably have Twitter open b/c at least with NFL so far their streaming has been solid.

*laughs*There will be memorable phrases that will echo in eternity. I want those, also the micro expressions, the nuances. There is a lot at stake.

        1. Twain Twain

So, in Feb, my team did a hack where we used a 360-degree camera to record audience’s reactions as one of us impersonated the Donald (hair flicks, square stance and aggressive pointing into air et al) and his “ban on Muslims” speech. We real-time passed those images of the audience through MS Cortana’s AI algorithm to read emotions. Audience loved it and we placed #2 in SF’s biggest dev hackathon. We had an idea to do similar with Periscope — albeit with earnings calls to gauge people’s micro expressions on hearing good / bad news.Alas, no API, no SDK from Periscope to help us.Moreover, Apple already acquired Emotient which can read people’s emotions using AI.@fredwilson:disqus — Imagine Apple TV measuring people’s emotional reactions during the Presidential debates or sports games or any content.

Really awesome Twain! Do you have videos of your participation in the hackaton? I would like to see. What’s Cortana latency? Client has to be online, right? How many subjects per second?Miss the lab, reality sent me back to earth this year.

          2. Twain Twain

The organizers have the videos somewhere. How many subjects per second? LOTS of devs in the room. Before I joined, the guys were thinking of covering all 7 emotions Cortana can do. I made the product call of 2 emotions (so the signal would be clear on the graph), coded first page of website and scripted our presentation — including the impersonation of the Donald. It was a hoot!* https://uploads.disquscdn.c…* https://uploads.disquscdn.c…@JLM:disqus – The Swiss also did watches well until Apple upended that somewhat.Imagine if we’d been able to make our hack into an app and the EMOTIONAL reactions of everyone in the room got measured by the AI — especially since you reckon it’ll be an emotions rather than policy driven election!

          3. Lawrence Brass

I love the concept, a lot. Put the device at the entrances and exits of a venue, mall, etc. You can compute continuously a happiness index of the flow entering and leaving the place, the net difference can be correlated with the effect of the experience inside. Tweak the experience until you maximize happiness. Wow. You can sell that! Its realtime emotional marketing! My intended question was: How many faces per second can Cortana process? Can it cope with a stream of people walking by?+ or in showcases and displays++ brings up a chat with @SubstrateUndertow about location based games inside shop rooms.

Thanks, Lawrence. I only work on products that are monetizable, lol.I am, though, more interested in solving the Natural Language understanding problem than vision recognition. They are connected, though:”Olga Russakovsky, a post-doctorate researcher at Carnegie Mellon University, says that visual learning systems also have to combat the biases that are inherent in limited data sets.“We talk about this all the time. When we analyze sort of closed-world sets of pictures, this represents biases of a visual world,” she tells InverseRussakovsky says that the key is to acknowledge the limitations of data sets and not making too broad of claims about the results.”https://www.inverse.com/art…* https://uploads.disquscdn.chttps://uploads.disquscdn.c

Cortana has shown examples of emotion recognition working in retail showcases & displays. That would complete change shelf placement and retailers might charge the FMCG brands more/less according to that emotion recog analytics. There will, clearly, be some privacy issues wrt our faces and reactions being recorded not for security purposes but for marketing purposes.

I am wondering how Twitter goes about letting people know that they can watch the debate there. If you hadn’t mentioned it I would have no way of knowing that. Ditto for Bloomberg coverage. I am thinking they need some mainstream advertising in the WSJ and NYT to get that message out. They could most likely trade for that (even though Bloomberg is a competitor) so it wouldn’t be a cash outlay. For many people twitter is out of sight out of mind and not a habit. The utility could be there. I think I might give it a try.

  22. DJL

I am choosing TV. A quick view of the Bloomberg news site shows the typical anti-Trump bias. (Not surprising given the political leanings of the tech-elite.)One amazing thing for Twitter: Both candidates use Tweets as their primary way of sending out comments and news bytes. I don’t think that has ever happened before and is a pretty major change.

Only confirms that polls are biased.Various meduims will sponsor live stream on YouTube live.

For the survey, none of the above. Instead, I’ll watch the whole thing on YouTube after it is over. That way I will be able to skip over the really disgusting, despicable, degenerate, deplorable, and irredeemable parts where nasty, lying, crooked, foreign policy disaster, national security disaster, disloyal, bribed, US saboteur, treasonous, useless, dysfunctional, incompetent, greedy, racist, original birther, bitter, obsessive, confused, heartless, and very sick Hillary plays her race card, her sexist card, and her gender card, lies, lies, lies, lies, lies, and lies, with more lies accuses Trump of being sexist, racist, misogynistic, xenophobic, Islamophobic, greedy, unqualified for the White House, bankrupt, a billionaire, etc. while she makes it clear that she is supposed to be the next POTUS, that it is her turn, that “she has come too far” to turn back now, that she is going to shut down US coal, US oil, US natural gas, US steel, be a great President of Punjab and the Muslim Brotherhood, export more US jobs, import more H1B slaves, import more cheap products, unleash the neurotic Greenies of the EPA, shut down more US businesses, help Mexico, South Korea, Japan, and China get rich, import more unvetted people from areas awash in jihaders and give them welfare, Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, ObamaCare, housing, education, and training, fully open US borders, give immediate US citizenship to everyone who can get into the US, dump on everyone in a uniform and call them “pigs”, implement carbon taxes, have massive subsidies for her buddies with 100% all natural, clean, safe, pure, green, renewable wind and solar energy, and refuse to talk about old issues such as her massive violation of section (f) of the US Espionage Act, her lying to the FBI, her lying to Congress, her destruction of data after receiving a subpoena from Congress, etc.During this time Trump will wipe the floor with her, cut her statements into minced meat, have her set aside her sweet, smiling girl act and return to her natural Wicked Witch of the East behavior, faint, have to be carried off stage, and stop the debate early. That is, if she shows up for the debate at all. IMHO, there’s a good chance she will come up with some lie, and a note from her physician, about having the flu or some such and skip the debate. Then she will stay locked up behind her big wall in her big house in Chappaqua with her full time, Saudi companion Huma while Bill travels the world screaming “Hillary for sale” and “d…ing bimbos” and the Hillary campaign spends a few hundred million dollars on TV ads attacking Trump. The US citizens will finally catch on to Hillary, have a gigantic GI eruption from both ends, have to mop the floor with the strongest hospital floor cleaner and rinse with chlorine bleach, get severe warnings from the NIH, CDC, FDA, USDA, and EPA to avoid contact with the effluent, incinerate all the clothes, shower with hospital strength soap, use industrial strength air freshener to try to get rid of the horrible stench, use full medical strength mouthwash to try to rinse out the horrible taste, and be glad the GI upset usually wasn’t fatal. The US vernacular will have a new condition, a Hillary, much, Much, MUCH, MUCH worse than the flu, migraines, leprosy, infectious TB (like Obama/Hillary have been importing into the US), anthrax, or the plague. The US will burn into its collective consciousness the lessons learned: (A) Some people are REALLY bad as people and REALLY good as liars. (B) Follow the money. (C) Look for the hidden agenda.Meanwhile Trump will continue speaking to crowds of 10,000 to 40,000+, take all the red states, take battleground states Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Colorado, Nevada, and Arizona along with some of the West Coast and some of the NE, and win by wide margins in both the popular vote and the Electoral College.Major parts of the mainstream media Hillary campaign propaganda machine will go out of business. The worst of the media royalty, anchors, and pundits will get new jobs as common labor at Super-fund sites. The US will get a fantastic new First Lady and the best POTUS since Ike, FDR, …, or maybe Lincoln. Then, as Trump rapidly gets the US going again, we will have lots of tell-all books about what the heck REALLY happened in US Democrat, Hillary, and POTUS politics in the last 8 years — we will be horrified and see that the US dodged a very serious bullet. Book publishers will be running around with $20 million advance checks and pressing them into the hands of everyone from White House janitors and chauffeurs to undersecretaries. The biased newsies will be regarded as a new species of an especially primitive and disgusting life form.

Can you please stay off the conspiracy theories ? It is one thing to be humorous or tongue-in-cheek and quite another to go full crazy.

Calling any criticism a conspiracy theory is a standard Hillary response. Please name a conspiracy theory from my second paragraph. 1. Lawrence Brass

It is Santiago Dr. Sigma, 8200 kilometres straight south of your desk. The Patagonia begins 1000 kilometres more down south and, indeed it is worth visiting. We go there whenever we can.A beautiful Boeing 787 can bring you (or the Skittle bag) here in a one 11 hour hop during the night, but that is not necessary for our bet as I have an address in midtown NYC for the company. .It is now after Labor Day and the first Presidential debate is upon us. It is game on.This debate will determine the winner of this election in much the same way that the first debate in 1960 — JFK v Nixon — decided that election.[Total audience 66MM out of a population of 179MM. JFK won by a narrow margin created and then enhanced when LBJ stole Texas and Joe Kennedy stole Illinois (thanks to the Daleys).]]It is a high stakes gamble for both candidates.HRC has the higher hill to climb as she has to deal with matters that are really not policy issues — her health and her integrity, both of which are poor and in decline.DJT, on the other hand, simply has to look Presidential, act Presidential, sound Presidential which should normally be a simple matter but this is The Donald J Trump and there is the potential for this to go Wrestlemania/Nascar.The reason why folks like Nascar? The wrecks. A lot of folks will be tuning in waiting to see the wrecks.Kellyanne Conway, the first woman Presidential campaign chairwoman in history, is now the key to this election. If she can keep DJT on the reservation, he will win and she will be the next WH CoS. If not, then he will lose. It is really that simple.Contrary to what folks think about the popularity of this programming, it will likely not be a record when compared to the current population of the US. The Pres Obama v Mitt Romney debate drew 67MM in 2012 when US population was 314MM v today’s estimated 320MM.Prediction:Trump by a TKO. .It is certainly a plausible scenario and one that either candidate’s handlers could conjure up or defend against. We shall see. Both candidate’s core supporters are in for the long term. I don’t think the remaining undecideds are policy folk. I think they are waiting to see if Trump looks like he could be President. When he went to Mexico and looked and behaved Presidential, that was the first time he really looked the role. Standing up there with the Mexican President, he not only looked the part, he took control of the oxygen in the room. This election will be emotional not policy driven. It looks like Ted Cruz will be endorsing DJT today. That is one of the last cracks in the GOPe but really an acknowledgement that he is otherwise done in Texas if he doesn’t.Trump is running against HRC, Pres Obama, the GOPe, the MSM, the punditry. It is a blessing. We shall see.JLMwww.themusingsofthebigredca…

Kellyanne? I was guessing press secretary. She’s darned good at TV interviews. I don’t know what people are really running the campaign, maybe Stephen Bannon. For CoS, maybe Newt. Want Newt in there someplace.Today the Hillary campaign is running a TV ad featuring young women and some old Trump locker room remarks about women who do/don’t rate as 10’s etc. The ad ends with do we really want such a POTUS for our young women?Darned good question, Hillary. I thought about that question long ago. Hillary, NO WAY do we want ANYTHING about you, your life, your fake marriage, your really nasty, cruel, heartless personality, your stealing from the poor, your lying, criminal behavior, and much more to be a POTUS or role model for ANY woman.Heartless? She stood on the ramp of the airport next to the coffins back from Benghazi and told the mothers and families of the dead that the cause was “that awful video” when she knew very well the cause was a terrorist attack. Later, when the mothers related the story, Hillary lied about the mothers. We’re talking a really, Really, REALLY nasty, heartless person.Hillary has a pattern: She takes some of the worst things about herself and then does a totally cooked up, flimsy effort at accusing her opponent of that thing. Curious. In some ways, maybe as a college student, Hillary was bright. Otherwise she is dumber than paint. Or, she has sh*t for “judgment”.The media keeps pumping out rivers of trivia each day, and one result can be to forget about the big stuff we have already seen. Well, at Newt’s Web site and his Facebook page, can see a terrific speech of his on radical Islam and how we have fumbled with it and the potential of having a nuke go off in a major US city. I looked around and found a clean YouTube copy and discovered what the speech was: It was Newt’s speech to the RNC. It’s terrific; still terrific; should keep every American totally focused, something NO American should forget about until Trump soundly defeats at least ISIS. The YouTube URL ishttps://www.youtube.com/wat…There is a little happy talk at the beginning and some more ordinary stuff at the end, but the middle on radical Islam totally knocks the socks off nearly every other speech for some years. Newt nailed it.

No logical argument will dissuade the faithful, no proof required to support the arguments.I grew up thinking that the Republicans were the party of logical, reason based economics supported arguments. The left was full of the utopian ideologues. Perhaps we’ve seen a flip?Alas, I fear the far left and far right are controlling way too much of the agenda. Where’s a reasoning person to land?
