Ohio State attack sends 9 to hospital

Posted by | November 28, 2016 11:39 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly

An active shooter was on the Ohio State campus.

…the school sent a series of tweets telling students to shelter in place and to “Run Hide Fight.”

Two of those people are in stable condition, the department said. It had no information on the other five people.

Around 10 a.m., the university’s emergency management department tweeted “Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College.” Watts Hall is a materials science and engineering building.

“Run, hide, fight” is standard protocol for active shooter situations. It means: Run, evacuate if possible; hide, get silently out of view; or fight, as a last resort, take action to disrupt or incapacitate the shooter if your life is in imminent danger.

    So sad!

  2. fahvel November 28th, 2016 at 12:15

wasn’t it the us military the last time a shooting with deaths took place at this school?

    • oldfart November 28th, 2016 at 12:39

(State) National Guard…not quite the same thing.
…Except using the things that goes bang.

      • Larry Schmitt November 28th, 2016 at 13:06

And it was Kent State, not Ohio State.

        • whatthe46 November 28th, 2016 at 13:12

everywhere i’m reading, it’s Ohio State.

          • Larry Schmitt November 28th, 2016 at 13:15

I meant the one fahvel was asking about. Back in 1970.

            • oldfart November 28th, 2016 at 13:18

I thought that was the one he was asking about.

            • whatthe46 November 28th, 2016 at 13:19

              oh ok.

          • R.J. Carter November 28th, 2016 at 13:15

The old incident with the Nat’l Guard was Kent State (“Four dead in O-hi-o” song). Ohio State is the current violence incident.

        • oldfart November 28th, 2016 at 13:16

          Correct.

    • trees November 29th, 2016 at 10:30

      Ok, here’s a brain burner for you….

Did the founders of this country, did the framers of the constitution….

      A) intend for you to be defenselessly massacred by armed government forces for the act of expressing yourselves via the first amendment during a lawful assembly in protest of that government.

      B) intend for you to be able to arm and defend yourselves against armed government forces who were intent on depriving you of your lives, and liberty, while exercising your first amendment rights during a lawful assembly

The key to understanding the second amendment, is to understand the first amendment.

And what was required to obtain it.

Second Amendment doesn’t do anything to protect ownership of cars and/or machetes — just guns. Thankfully, as the only ones present were used by police to put an end to this.

      • Bunya November 28th, 2016 at 14:08

Cars and/or machetes weren’t designed to kill. If you are using these things to murder someone, you’re not using the devices for which they were intended. If you are, your drivers license needs to be revoked.

        • R.J. Carter November 28th, 2016 at 14:32

The point was the irrelevancy of the cartoon to the situation at hand, which as it turned out, was not a gun situation at all.

      • William November 28th, 2016 at 15:03

From the article. “Ohio State shooting sends 9 to hospital”…and “Around 10 a.m., the university’s emergency management department tweeted “Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus”.

        • R.J. Carter November 28th, 2016 at 15:48

And the article is wrong. That’s the point.

        • trees November 28th, 2016 at 16:17

Here, I know reading compression is a little tough for you, but let’s see if we can digest the headline.

          “Ohio State shooting”

This means that there was a “shooting” at Ohio State.

          “sends 9 to hospital”

This means that 9 of something went to the hospital…

Ok, so we know from the headline that a, what, occurred?

          Hmmm…

          The headline stated “a shooting”

And that the shooting sent 9 to the hospital.

So the shooting sent 9 of something to the hospital.

Ok, now for the fun part. You’re going to have to concentrate, but I know you can do this…

          Is the headline….

          A) Accurate and factual

          B) Inaccurate and misleading

          C) None of the above.

          • William November 28th, 2016 at 16:24

I know admitting your favorite fair and balanced “news” outlet has a 27 percent accuracy rating is not one of your strong points, but ask yourself anyway. Where would anyone get the idea that there was a shooting at Ohio state? Get someone to read the caption for you.

            Your move moron.

Myself, I was pointing out the inaccuracy.

              You?

You got caught “jumping the gun”.

But, instead of admitting that you got caught in a zealous moment…

You chose instead to blame one news outlet in particular.

That says a lot about your character.

              • whatthe46 November 28th, 2016 at 19:46

are you stupid. wait never mind. you are.

              • William November 28th, 2016 at 21:23

I didn’t jump the gun you idiot. Your “fair and balanced” fake news source did. You would have thought they might have gotten better after they sh*t-canned their sex offender, but no. BTW what is it with you right wing wackos and your love for sex offenders anyway? “Character”, LOL. You’re in love with a sex offender who feels up his daughter in public, brags about molesting women, paying no taxes and cheating people. Character. LOL. What a joke. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ef484db99ff388137521086f0e79000816d9268f6c28c95631779b0eb8ff395f.png

That is what we need gun owners to have.

So are you saying that If you join a “well regulated militia” the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

          WELL REGULATED MILITIA?

          • trees November 28th, 2016 at 15:12

The founders intended for the people, meaning all of it’s citizens, to have the right to bear arms.

            Why?

            As a safeguard against tyranny.

            • anothertoothpick November 28th, 2016 at 15:17

yeah but it also says something about

regulated militia. Which does not include everybody.

Only those that are in a “well regulated militia”

              • R.J. Carter November 28th, 2016 at 15:46

It does not say “the right of the members of a well regulated militia” shall not be infringed. But nice try. Protip: Sentence diagramming.

Yes, that’s apparently all you’ve offered.
FYI: People have the right’s guaranteed them in the Constitution. People can also be DENIED those rights once they have proven themselves undeserving of them. Unless you have a working Minority Report that you’re willing to live under yourself, a person can own a gun until they prove they shouldn’t have one. Sucks, but that’s freedom for you.

                    • anothertoothpick November 28th, 2016 at 16:12

First of all the 2nd amendment says absolutely nothing about individual ownership of guns..

And second of all a vast majority of society says crazy people should not have guns.

                    • trees November 28th, 2016 at 23:50

the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

                      Here, we’ll read it together…

                      “The right of the people”

This means all of the people, it’s an all inclusive term.

                      “shall not”

That’s an absolute. It’s a very powerful legal term.

                      “be infringed”.

                      in·fringe
                      inˈfrinj/
                      verb
past tense: infringed; past participle: infringed
actively break the terms of (a law, agreement, etc.).
“making an unauthorized copy would infringe copyright”
synonyms: contravene, violate, transgress, break, breach; More
act so as to limit or undermine (something); encroach on.
“his legal rights were being infringed”
synonyms: restrict, limit, curb, check, encroach on; undermine, erode, diminish, weaken, impair, damage, compromise
“the surveillance infringed on his rights”

The second amendment imparts as absolute, the rights of the people, (the whole), to possess guns.

                    • anothertoothpick November 30th, 2016 at 07:50

Maybe we should read the entire amendment “together”

                    • Red Mann November 29th, 2016 at 01:11

And generally by the time they’re shown undeserving people have died. Are people how leave loaded, unsecured weapons laying around for little children to kill with deserving of ownership?

                • bpollen November 29th, 2016 at 04:32

OK. Let us look at the sentence. “The right of the people” section of it is a clause dependent on “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State” part. Ergo, the very premise on which the latter clause rests is no longer extant. As in “if premise, then conclusion.” An example – Overdosing on opiates, being life-threatening, swift injection of Narcan shall be appropriate. Then change the initial premise – Anaphilactic shock, being life-threatening, swift injection of Narcan shall be appropriate. Changing the original premise but keeping the same conclusion would be what is called “contraindicated.”

            • arc99 November 28th, 2016 at 15:32

Justice Scalia himself noted that the intent of the founders is irrelevant. What matters are the words they wrote in the Constitution.

The phrase “well regulated” definitely appears in the 2nd amendment.

Nothing in the 2nd amendment refers to safeguards against tyranny.

Funny how those who would preach about strict construction and rail against judicial activism are the first ones to inject their personal opinions into the interpretation of the US Constitution, using justifications that appear nowhere in the Constitution.

The Voting Rights Act suffered a similar fate, being struck down based on criteria which appear nowhere in the 15th amendment which was the Constitutional justification for the VRA.

Here is a link to the speech by the late Justice Scalia. Regardless of what the founders intent was for the first amendment, 2nd amendment or any part of the Bill of Rights, the bottom line is that “well regulated” is written in the 2nd amendment. Protection against tyranny is not

              http://www.proconservative.net/PCVol5Is225ScaliaTheoryConstlInterpretation.shtml

Associate Justice Antonin Scalia presented the foregoing statement as a speech at the Catholic University of America on October 18, 1996.
              .
              .
              .
You will never hear me refer to original intent, because I am first of all a textualist, and secondly an original- ist. If you are a textualist, you don’t care about the intent, and I don’t care if the Framers of the U.S. Constitution had some secret meaning in mind when they adopted its words. I take the words as they were promulgated to the people of the United States, and what is the fairly understood meaning of those words.

              • trees November 29th, 2016 at 10:05

Justice Scalia himself noted that the intent of the founders is irrelevant. What matters are the words they wrote in the Constitution.

The author’s intent is exactly what matters. Interpretation is to understand what the author is conveying via the written word. In translating a document, or interpreting, the goal is to understand what the author is saying…..

Nothing in the 2nd amendment refers to safeguards against tyranny.

The only way to reach this conclusion is to view the document in a vacuum. The only way to understand what the people who wrote the document intended, is to incorporate the history of the events that led to the documents writing with the words of the document itself.

Funny how those who would preach about strict construction and rail against judicial activism are the first ones to inject their personal opinions into the interpretation of the US Constitution, using justifications that appear nowhere in the Constitution.

                Sir, respectfully…

You are the one attempting to do this.

Regardless of what the founders intent was for the first amendment, 2nd amendment or any part of the Bill of Rights, the bottom line is that “well regulated” is written in the 2nd amendment. Protection against tyranny is not

R J Carter explains the meaning of “well regulated” extremely well.

As to Scalia, and what he’s saying…

He’s talking about the amendment process. That would be the process whereby the article is further refined to reflect the will of the people in accordance with the culture and in agreement with popular sentiment.

You seek to amend the constitution. I get that, but if you think the second amendment was originally written to mean only law enforcement, or only the governing authorities, or only the military, or even meant a blending of all of these in the abstract and embodied in the term, “well regulated militia”…

                Well, you’re simply wrong.

                There is no getting around….

“The rights of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed”

You will have to suppress and deny a sacred right. The right to self protection.

Now, maybe I’m wrong, but I think you once told me that you’re a gun owner.

Do you really think that you should be deprived of this right?

                I don’t.

            • anothertoothpick November 28th, 2016 at 15:35

In a democracy guns will never be a “safeguard against tyranny”

If you are pointing a gun at someone.

              You are the tyrant.

            • Sy Colepath November 28th, 2016 at 15:38

              “As a safeguard against tyranny.”

              Yeah, from England, dumbass.

            • anothertoothpick November 28th, 2016 at 15:46

So why didn’t the founders just say “the right to own guns shall not be infringed”?

But they didn’t say that did they?

              • R.J. Carter November 28th, 2016 at 15:47

They also never foresaw the Internet or high-speed printing. Ergo, the first amendment doesn’t apply to such things and only protects pamphlets produced from a hand-crank.

                • arc99 November 28th, 2016 at 15:53

So why is it that conservatives ridicule Justice Ginsberg among others, who see the US Constitution as a living document that must evolve as society evolves?

                  • R.J. Carter November 28th, 2016 at 15:56

Because it’s not. My comment was facetious. The right of a free ‘press’ is all encompassing, as is the right to bear ‘arms.’

                    • arc99 November 28th, 2016 at 16:05

I agree that the first amendment protects hand printed pamphlets produced in 1799 as well as the latest blog at Infowars.com

Certainly the founders never envisioned the press would include individuals publishing editorials in the comfort of their living rooms, with the ability to reach a global audience.

I am also pretty sure that when drafting Article 1 Section 8 to empower the federal government to regulate commerce, the founders never envisioned a government agency to approve the design and manufacturing techniques of private sector commercial transportation vehicles. So is the FAA unconstitutional?

The press of 1799 and the press of 2016 are two very different things. So if the meaning of the press “evolves” to mean not just pamphlets and newspapers printed on paper, and the meaning of commerce evolves to mean machines that fly through the air, then why is the same not also true of “well regulated”?

                    • R.J. Carter November 28th, 2016 at 16:06

It’s the placement of the phrase, not the meaning of it. The inherent expansion applied to ‘press’ and ‘commerce,’ to preserve parallelism, would be applied to ‘people’ and ‘arms’, not the prepositional clause.

                    • arc99 November 28th, 2016 at 16:20

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, and I have mine.

My opinion is that just as the definition of commerce now includes machines that fly through the air, it is not unreasonable to conclude that well regulated now includes background checks and magazine capacity laws. Magazines did not exist until almost 100 years after the Constitution was ratified.

But since neither your opinion nor mine is written in the Constitution, I guess we will have to leave it to the lawyers.

              • Hirightnow November 28th, 2016 at 16:45

                So, WHO regulates these militia?
If it’s some anonymous citizen, then throw out the rest of the Constitution, because you’ve just stated that anarchy is the rule of the day; someone’s militia may see Trump as a despot who should hang for crimes.
If some government-regulated entity, please state WHICH government (fed or state) is in charge.
                Once more, R.J.: “WELL REGULATED”

The problem with the point of view you’ve adopted is that you see a need for an outside source to do the regulating; understandable in this day and age of government ‘regulations’ where the two words have become conjoined to the point of being inseparable.

From Constitution.org: “The phrase “well-regulated” was in common use long before 1789,
and remained so for a century thereafter. It referred to the property of
something being in proper working order. Something that was well-regulated was
calibrated correctly, functioning as expected. Establishing government oversight
of the people’s arms was not only not the intent in using the phrase in the 2nd
amendment, it was precisely to render the government powerless to do so that the
                  founders wrote it.”

                  Spike.

(returns before the hop) You evade the question; What is to keep “Liberal Larry” and his anti-Trump pals from committing murder in the name of patriotism, unanimity, and love of the Republic?
You’ve merely said that anyone who can march in step is qualified.

murder in the name of patriotism, unanimity, and love of the Republic?”

Nothing. The Constitution allows for it, and the Founding Fathers call for it.

                      But they’d better win.

Yes, Warren’s name will always be on the byline (much like Franklin W. Dixon on the Hardy Boys), as it’s his baby. He passed just over a year ago, sadly, before I got a chance to actually meet with him. Working on the next Destroyer book now, and I’ve been using the first 75 or so as a template (you know, the “good stuff” :) ).

And in modern times, where is this “tyranny” supposed to originate? Of course with a theo-fascist government in the offing, your government tyranny fantasy might materialize.

            • Red Mann November 29th, 2016 at 01:03

No, it was to ensure a militia could quickly be raised to fend of attacks on the government and that the militia would be armed and trained with firearms. In the days with no standing army and no police force it made sense. The concept had noting to do with any tyranny by the government, that is a right wing fairy story.
The ammosexuals have perverted the 2nd to justify owning weapons of mass destruction. e have over 30,000 people a year killed by guns, many of them children, yet the right paints any attempts to reduce the slaughter as “THEY”RE COMING FOR OUR GUNS< THEY"RE COMING FOR OUR GUNS!".

            • ANNG14 November 30th, 2016 at 00:31

Nope, the tyranny protection is a myth propagated by the NRA.
The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution states: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State.”
There was no standing army at the time the Constitution was written.
Attempts to overthrow the US government is considered treason by law.

Bunya, we both live in the Midwest, I have owned a gun for years. I had to use it once because a fool had broken into my house, WHILE I WAS THERE. Well, I am not going to go any further, but I do believe in RESPONSIBLE gun ownership. I have CC now. It is better to be SAFE, than sorry.

            • ANNG14 November 30th, 2016 at 00:26

Glad you were protected. That being said, you or someone in your family are far more likely to be injured or killed by your own gun than for that gun to protect you. Was your intruder armed?

        • Bunya November 28th, 2016 at 15:08

I, for one, am one of them. Killing devices should be outlawed by all except for the police and the military. Unfortunately, the 2nd amendment exists for people like you who need to prove their manliness by owning a penis extension.
