A man is currently renting out a Chevy conversion van parked in Soho on Airbnb for $69/night. Yes, you can live the #VanLife bohemian social media movement experience right here in the Big Apple for a comical amount of money.
According to the listing, this is the premiere way to experience NYC economically: "Soho Vintage custom van with cozy sofa-bed and lots of natural light. Perfect for international travelers, backpackers and the #vanlife experience. Pillows and blankets provided. Great location. Perfect for an affordable place to sleep in the best NY neighborhood. Van is for sleeping only, no driving, and is not parked at listed address. Van’s Soho address will be provided."
Sure, there's no bathroom or shower, but you do get free guest passes to a nearby gym which has both. As the lister, Meng, cautions: "Van-life is for those who embrace adventure and have no problem roughing it, to have a new and memorable experience. Like camping, the elements can be a factor. Be prepared for street-parking atmosphere, and to use restrooms that can be found nearby. Ideal guests approach van-life with an open mind, a sense of humor, and a fun attitude. This is of course not the first Airbnb entrepreneur to try to take advantage of the fact that it is technically not illegal to sleep overnight in a vehicle in NYC. Back in 2015, a Queens man rented out an authentic NYC taxi cab for $99/night, which included lots of taxi-themed pillows and such. But this new van has its own amenities as well, as you can see below.
