In an interview with PrideSource, Margot Robbie talked about playing Harley Quinn and the potential for Poison Ivy to join the DCEU. Robbie said,
“If you read the comics you know that Poison Ivy and Harley have an intimate relationship. In some comics they convey it as a friendship; in other comics you can see that they’re actually sexually involved as a couple. I’ve been trying to – I would love to have Poison Ivy thrown into the universe, because the Harley and Poison Ivy relationship is one of my favorite aspects of the comics, so I’m looking to explore that on screen.”
As far as we know, Poison Ivy won’t appear in Harley Quinn’s next outing, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Robbie will instead be joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya. Robbie is also set to appear in James Gunn’s Suicide Squad 2, as well as a standalone Harley/Joker movie.
But here’s the thing: it’s 2018 and we still haven’t had a queer-led superhero film. If Robbie and Warner Bros. want to change the game and do something to truly rock the DCEU, they should give us a screwball romantic comedy centered on Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. If the titular emancipation in Birds of Prey is Harley’s freedom from her abusive relationship with the Joker, then she is primed for a new romantic arc in any follow-up films.
Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy have pinged our gaydar ever since Batman: The Animated Series, which saw the villainous duo teaming up and even living together. In 2015, DC Comics writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner confirmed the relationship was canon in a tweet, calling the two “girlfriends without the jealousy of monogamy.” And just last year, we had confirmation of their relationship in Harley Quinn #25:

The dynamic duo also appear as a couple in DC Comics Bombshells, and even tie the knot in the Injustice: Gods Among Us prequel comics. The characters complement each other so well, and their relationship often brings lightness and levity to the doom and gloom world of the Batverse. I’d much rather watch an enemies-to-lovers PoisonQuinn story than yet another look at her toxic and abusive relationship with the Joker.
Unfortunately, we are likely a long way off from the PoisonQuinn film of our dreams. Birds of Prey won’t be released until 2020, and between Robbie’s DCEU commitments and the myriad projects she has lined up, it could be years before we see the pairing, if at all. Still, Robbie, who is a producer on Birds of Prey, wields a great deal of influence in the DCEU, and if she’s aboard the PoisonQuinn ship, there’s a chance the coupling may see the light of day.
As for who would play Poison Ivy, Robbie said “You know what? I’ve thought about it a lot and there’s no one person who springs to mind. I’m pretty open-minded.”
