Box Office: July 19-21

It’s a busy weekend at the box office as Disney flexes its muscle and draws people out into the theaters. With a $185 million domestic debut, The Lion King did what the entire lineup did the same weekend last year. It had the biggest opening for July and is the second largest opening of 2019 – and the seventh largest of all time. The film also did another $269 million overseas with its debut and is at $531 million internationally.

And, not surprisingly, the biggest debate is now whether to classify it as animated or live-action. That distinction is going to disappear very soon with how film and TV is being made.

Nobody else was putting up anything new of note against it but there are other things to talk about. Avengers: Endgame has finally eked out enough to take the top spot over Avatar, leading to plenty of debate that will leave fans of both properties arguing for years. Have at it, kiddoes.

Spider-Man: Far From Home continues to do well as it added another $21 million to its domestic count to bring it to $320 million in its third week. It feels like it’s been out longer than that!

Next week has one new release going wide with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood where the latest Quentin Tarantino film will hit 3,500 screens.
