Disney’s photo-realistic CG animated remake of “The Lion King” looks to have won the weekend box-office around much of the world.
The film took in an estimated $185 million opening weekend in North America, which would be the second-best opening of 2019 and replaces “Incredibles 2” ($182.7 million) as the ninth biggest North American launch of all time and the biggest July opening ever.
The movie debuted in China a week ago and has since pulled in a further $269.4 million internationally, bringing its overseas total so far to $346 million and its global total to $531 million. In other words, it will mark at least the third (and potentially fourth) Disney title to cross $1 billion this year.
Critical reviews were mixed, but the film’s CinemaScore of ‘A’ suggests audiences were very satisfied with the film. “Spider-Man: Far From Home” dropped to second with $21 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to $319.6 million and its worldwide total to over $970.7 million. It will become the first “Spider-Man” film to cross the billion-dollar mark.
“Toy Story 4” came in third with a further $14.6 million added to a domestic total of $375.5 million. “Crawl” was fourth, dropping 50% to a further $6 million. “Yesterday” was fifth with $5.1 million.
