The Hyundai Creta cemented its place at the top of SUV sales in January 2021 as well and also beat its Korean twin, the Seltos, by a decent margin.

In all, the Creta managed to rake in 12,284 unit sales, with a very strong 78 percent year-over-year (YoY) growth rate, while the Seltos found 9869 takers, which a 34 percent degrowth.

Mahindra’s Scorpio still manages to find a good number of buyers, with its January 2021 sales being little under 4100 units. MG’s Hector continues to perform solidly for the brand, raking in 3003 unit sales.

Fifth-placed Tata Harrier was the model in the January 2021 SUV sales chart that recorded the highest YoY growth rate of 240 percent. Tata sold 2443 units of the SUV that is slowly gaining more ground with each passing month.

Another Mahindra, the soon to be replaced XUV500, came next, with 888 unit sales. But, during the same period last year, 1455 units of the SUV got sold, thus resulting in a 39 percent degrowth.

If there is one model that Maruti has to let go, it has to be the S-Cross, for it only managed to lure in 580 buyers last month. Maybe its replacement can do better when launched.

Jeep’s Compass (394 units), was the sole contributor to FCA’s sales in January and it is followed by the Renault Duster that was driven home by 336 people, while tenth-placed Nissan Kicks did less than half the sales number of the Duster.

Finally, in the last 2 spots sit electric cars in the form of MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric, which managed 124 units and 21 units, respectively.

Collectively, cars in the list recorded 34,175 unit sales, almost similar to what they managed during the same period last year.

The Fortuner’s sales has boomed

Coming to the January 2021 premium SUV sales, it looks like Toyota’s plan to give the Fortuner a facelift has worked well in its favour, for the SUV stretched its lead by a decent margin.

Toyota sold 1169 units of the premium SUV in January 2021, as opposed to 584 units in December 2020 and considering the fact that only 228 units of the car got sold in January 2020, YoY growth figure stands at 413 percent.

Ford sold 545 units of the Endeavour to put it back into second place in the premium SUV sales list, while the MG Gloster was chosen by 475 individuals.

The Tucson from Hyundai also did better than the same period last year and in December 2020, for its sales grew by 238 percent, with 125 unit sales.

While the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace fetched only 74 unit sales, the addition of the Tiguan 5-seater (recently caught on test), will certainly help in increasing the figure. However, such positivity cannot be applied to either the Honda CR-V or the Mahindra Alturas G4.
