Q:Best of luck to you guys!
Thank you! This project embodies the power and influence of our collective voice.
It’s important to remember that this is far from the first of our efforts as artists, filmmakers, communicators, and storytellers to not only influence public opinion, but the decision-makers — far removed from the scientific consensus at times — who oversee legislative affairs such as space policy and the appropriation of funds to agencies like NASA.
After crucial servicing missions deploying astronauts to service the Hubble Telescope in space during the early 2000’s, NASA, penny-pinching an already dwindling budget, decided to forego a servicing mission slated for 2006 which was considered essential to permit the orbiting astronomical observatory to continue operating beyond 2010.
Instead, NASA was directed toward pulling all of its effort send humans to the Moon and Mars under a program called ‘Constellation’ under then President George Bush. This directive also set in motion the phasing out of the space shuttle to continue completion of the International Space Station.
The public was in utter dismay, rallying for Hubble with a barrage of emails, bombarding the Baltimore-based Space Telescope Science Institute (who run and operate Hubble) with suggestions on how to preserve the mission.
People demanded answers regarding why the world’s favorite space telescope was being ineffectually disregarded, asking “What percentage of NASA’s budget is this?” In which the directors of STScI confirmed, “About 1%.”
In support of public outcry, a separate site was developed by the STScI staff dedicated to taking suggestions, fielding questions, and providing a place for the advocacy and passion of Hubble supporters via a means by which they could raise their voice.
Others, such as independent filmmaker David Gaynes, directed their passion - like us - to producing an inspirational conversation piece on the legacy of the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA, and the future of space exploration at the helm of government funding and the whim of policymakers who lacked the vision necessary to unchain NASA from the shackles of an unstable budget. His documentary film was called ‘Saving Hubble’, and he took the film around the country on a tour called 'The Hubble Roadshow’.
With 'Fight for Space’, we take on a similar - perhaps grander - endeavor, by analyzing not only the economic and cultural benefits of human/space exploration, but the historic political events that have steered - for better or worse - the American space program.
This truly is the film we’ve all been passionately wishing to emerge from the ether of political uncertainty and communicate our frustrations, fears, hopes, ambitions, and dreams along the road toward our spacefaring future that we’ve dramatically veered away from.
Our message is clear…
We appreciate your support and all those who join this mission to rally for our future. Back the Kickstarter campaign, share our press release, tweet at us fightforspace, and pass on our media to others.
