Mon dieu, Mrs Macron! How Brigitte, 64, took on Melania Trump, 47, in short hemlines and a quirky nurse-inspired dress - but the First Lady won the style war in conservative chic

  • French First Lady has welcome Melania Trump in Paris for the first time
  • Has been sporting A-line dresses with above-the-knee hemlines
  • Melania has opted for midi length skirts and more tailored look
  • Both women have been channeling red, white and blue of the French flag

She's been welcoming the US First Lady on home soil for the first time, so it's no surprise Brigitte Macron has been pulling out all the sartorial stops for the Trumps' Bastille Day visit to Paris

Since their arrival yesterday, the French president's wife, 64, has sported a number of very youthful looks with daring hemlines and a quirky nurse's uniform-inspired white coat.

Meanwhile, Melania, 47, has been the epitome of conservative chic in midi hemlines and long-sleeved jackets.

'As President Trump’s first trip to France, I think we were always going to see the First Lady dress to impress - and she certainly has in this instance,' political style blogger Laura Dunn told FEMAIL.

'Both women have their own sense of style which is completely different, but I think we’re seeing from both Melania and Macron a conscious choice to tap into the red, white and blue of the French flag.

For the traditional Bastille Day military parade on the Champs Elysees, Mrs Trump opted for a white dress with a pattern of blue, red and pink flowers, while her French counterpart sported a chic tailored navy dress with a matching jacket.

For dinner last night at Le Jules Verne, a Michelin-starred restaurant that is located on the second floor of the Eiffel Tower, Melania wore a form fitting sleeveless white and blue frock featuring a red belt around her waist for the dinner.

Brigitte looked equally chic in black and white short-sleeve dress featuring a floral pattern and a high neck collar.

Earlier in the day Melania was the epitome of elegance as she channeled former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in a scarlet Dior skirt suit with matching pumps.

Brigitte, 64, plumped for a mod-inspired minidress by Louis Vuitton paired with blue suede heels, meaning together they were wearing the colors of the French flag.

However, while they may have gone for similar colour schemes they have opted for very different silhouettes.

'Whereas Melania is wearing more tailored pieces such as a belted in dress and nipped in waist red skirt and jacket suit, Mrs Macron goes for more A line dresses, highlighting the chic silhouettes of French fashion and her great figure.

'Mrs Macron’s style is pretty consistent, and we saw throughout the Presidential campaign that she would rework pieces as well as sticking to shapes and designers that work for her.

'She wears minimal accessories and is less ‘showy’ in her personal style when compared to the First Lady.

Stylist Natalie Robinson added: 'In comparison to Melania Trump, Mrs Macron's style is somewhat daring and playful.

'Her preference over a shift dress, as opposed to a three-quarter length dress or skirt, suits her petite frame.

'This style of dress it more appropriate for those who are svelte and smaller in height. Trump may have a more statuesque frame but Mrs Macron definitely has the legs to run fiercely ahead in the style stakes.'

The appearance of the French First Lady certainly didn't go unnoticed by Mr Trump who made a notable addition to his long list of questionable comments about women on Thursday as he told her: 'You know, you're in such good shape.'

The compliment to Brigitte Macron was made in front of her husband Emmanuel, the 39-year-old French president, and Trump, 71, repeated it to him before turning back to Mme Macron and saying to her: 'Beautiful.'

The exchange was captured on a French official Facebook live stream. What was not captured was Melania Trump's reaction, as her back was to the camera.
