How to Change the Frequency of Your Ceiling Fan Remote?

Educate

Is your ceiling fan turning on and off on its own, even when you’re not in the room? Don’t call the Ghost Busters just yet. Most ceiling fan remote controls come with the factory set frequency. If two or more ceiling fans have the same frequency they can be controlled by either fan’s remote, which can have a range of 40 to 50 feet. Hence, the other remote is messing with your ceiling fan. This is more likely to affect you if you live in an apartment or a townhouse. A good rule of thumb is to create a unique frequency as soon as you get your fan.

How to Tell if my Ceiling Fan Remote or Receiver is Broken?

If you've gone through the steps above without success, you have determined either the ceiling fan remote or the receiver is no longer working. If you have another ceiling fan remote that you know is in working order handy you can follow the above steps to sync the frequency with your ceiling fan receiver. If the working remote works with the receiver this confirms that your ceiling fan remote is broken and your receiver is working. If the working remote does not work with the ceiling fan receiver, your ceiling fan receiver is broken and it is possible your ceiling fan remote is still working.

Assuming you don't have another ceiling fan and remote to test your troublesome fan with and the remote just suddenly stopped working, you may want to consider replacing both the remote and the receiver. The easiest way to find a replacement remote with all the settings that your existing remote offered is to shop by brand. Note, there are univeral remotes on the market, but they typically have limited settings.

Remotes typically have the brand logo on the front or back of the remote. Make note of what brand and model, if known, of your ceiling fan and click the link below to shop by brand.
