Kotaku: Activision to get Bungie stock if Destiny 2 misses 2017 [Up: Bungie Denies]

Thought this was important enough to warrant its own thread.
Although some of the folks behind Destiny 2 might crave more time to add content and beef up the game, here’s an interesting bit of news to consider: If Bungie misses this year for Destiny 2, Activision is awarded a hefty chunk of the independent studio’s stock, according to two sources familiar with goings-on at Bungie.

Bungie employees’ stock vesting schedule is also based on game releases, including Destiny 2, which gives them major incentives to get the sequel out this year.

What in the hell kind of agreement is that?

If that is true, it will 100 percent come out this year. It may be full of bugs and severely lacking in content (sound familiar?) but it will be out.

I wonder if it was one of the close signed at the beginning of their contract with Activision or if it's something that got added afterwards.

Because if that's the latter, Bungie must be desperate to gamble their independence so close after regaining it back.

I wonder if they're also going to get screwed over by a review aggregate clause.

Ha. No way it misses 2017.

They must be getting an insane deal from Activision to have agreed to this, given they bought back their own independence and could have gotten a blank check from just about any publisher.

Reminds me of the crazy pressure to get Halo 2 out the door all those years ago. Didn't they basically re-write the game from scratch a year from release?

It would have been nice to have a 4 year cycle on this game given Bungie's ambitions, on a new and improved engine no less. Oh well, hopefully they can support the game with content post launch.

To be fair to Activision, Bungie asked for some hefty rewards for how the game performed, so if you're going to play hardball, you're going to get a hardball deal.

Fortunately Bungie have a long history of releasing feature-complete games with a fully fleshed out story so this'll work out fine.

Well we know Destiny 2 is coming out this year then for better or worse.

Wonder if this was part of a renegotiation after last years delay.

I'm sure they'll make the date, but damn is that not a threat if I ever saw one. Hopefully the fans (and the devs) don't get screwed out on this deal.

This doesn't make Activision the "bad guy" btw.

As much as I love Bungie / Destiny they haven't done the greatest job of holding up their ends of the agreement for this franchise so far

They already let them delay it for a full year.

Only fair.

Yeah but, what were Bungie/Activision expecting from a full sequel with just a 2 year cycle? Not even Call of Duty is on a 2 year cycle anymore. Letting them work on it for another year was kind of the obvious thing to do to begin with.

well considering their original deal was a 5 game 10 year deal(edit: looks like four games every two years), and Bungie has delivered a total of 1 game in the last six years, something had to give.

If anything Activision has been pretty patient about it. THough it's easy to be patient when you are sitting on a goldmine. maybe even a diamond mine.

The contract (full contract) was published in its entirety by the LA Times, and provided a number of pieces of information that were previously unknown and/or only speculated:

"Destiny" is the operating title for Bungie's next project.
Destiny will consist of a series of four MMO-style "sci-fantasy action shooter" titles, released every other year beginning in Fall 2013.
Expansion pack-style downloadable content (DLC), code named "Comet," will be released every other year beginning in 2014.
Destiny will feature a number of DLCs, microtransactions, and value-added paid services.
Destiny is targeting a "Teen" rating from the ESRB in the United States and a PEGI16 rating in Europe.
Activision, as previously confirmed, retains the exclusive right to publish all Destiny titles. However, Bungie retains ownership of the Destiny intellectual property regardless of its relationship with Activision.
Bungie will receive $2.5 million per year from 2010 through 2013 to develop Destiny.
Bungie will receive between 20 and 35% of cumulative operating income for Destiny, depending on the total amount of income.
Bungie is eligible for a number of performance and sales-based bonuses depending on Destiny meeting certain development milestones and sales goals.

Is this game really coming out this year? I thought they would reveal at E3 and release will be next year because it was not at E3 last year. How come there have been no media, or even teasers at all? Maybe I missed them?

So we will get a half finished game AGAIN and the rest of the game later as half baked DLCs... I heard this story before.

PS.: Loved the first game, I won't get the second though. I'm officially done with this business strategy.

We've known this since the IW dudes vs. Activision lawsuit from 2010. Was wondering when it would finally come to this. They're currently running two years behind the original delivery schedule.

They're presumably going to just have a 3-5 month announce -> release cycle.

Only fair.

Wasn't the original Destiny also delayed? Activision is probably frustrated at pouring money into Bungie and both full games were delayed.

Either way, I hope to God that year delay helped them out. I can't imagine Destiny 2 launching in the same state as Destiny.
