Uxendon Manor - Origin of Name

Uxendon was first recorded as a place in 1257 and a manor was first mentioned in 1373. In 1516 the Bellamy family acquired Uxendon Manor which was situated on the western side of Barn Hill. The family were farmers but as Roman Catholics they offered refuge to Catholic priests who at the time, during the reign of the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I, were frequently persecuted. The house had hidden passages where the family could hide Catholics who turned to them for help. Eventually the Bellamy family were arrested and imprisoned. Some of the family were executed and the rest lost their land. The area continued as farm land but the house fell into decay over the years. In 1933 the new railway line from WembleyPark to Stanmore was built across the site.
