Contest - Win Five Books from Canada's Snare Books

One of the best things about publishing a music. literature, and pop culture blog is the pleasant surprises each day's mail brings. Usually it is a single band, author, or DVD that catches my eye or ear, the other day an entire publisher amazed me when these five books showed up in the post.

Snare Books' mandate is to "publish emerging and innovative writers who work in the experimental Canadian literary tradition." These five books, which include two short story collections (The Olive and the Dawn by Ian Orti and The Taste of Penny by Jeff Parker) and three collections of poetry (Generator, by Ian Christopher Goodman, Security Posture, by Sarah Dowling, and Thresh by Kim Minkus), showcase quality writing and definitely fulfill the publisher's mandate. I started reading one of these books and didn't stop until all five were finished... I hadn't read anything from Snare Books in the past, and other than Jeff Parker (whose novel Ovenman was amazing), but when I turned the last page of the fifth book, I had discovered four new authors and an impressive independent publisher willing to take risks.

To enter the contest, leave a comment in this post with the name of as book, song or album you were surprised to actually like.

The winner will receive the following prizes:

Generator, by Ian Christopher Goodman
The Olive and the Dawn, by Ian Orti
Security Posture, by Sarah Dowling
The Taste of Penny, by Jeff Parker
