Ahead of Yom Hazikaron, consider honoring Israel’s fallen by taking upon yourselves a kind or sacred act, done in memory of one of these heroes.

Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day, is a time to remember those who lost their lives during the struggle for Israel’s independence as well as the soldiers who have died while serving in Israel’s armed forces. Victims of terror attacks are also remembered.

There is hardly a family in all of Israel who does not have a relative or friend who has died in service to the nation.

As we prepare to celebrate 70 years since the creation of the State of Israel, it’s important that people from around the world take time to remember the 23,632 soldiers and security forces that sacrificed their lives for Israel’s existence.

This year, a new way exists for people around the globe to honor these fallen heroes.

“Yizkereim: Honor Israel’s Fallen” (“Yizkereim” in Hebrew means remember them) is a project which enables anyone to honor the fallen by taking upon themselves at least one kind or sacred act done in memory of one of the fallen.

Launched in February, the project has collected thousands of acts of Chesed, kindness, be they public service, prayer, Torah learning or the giving of Tzedakah, charity, by anyone anywhere in the world, in the memory of the fallen.

Yizkereim is designed to keep each soldier’s memory alive with positive actions done in their memory.

When reports of these actions are posted on a specially designated website, bereaved families can read about these acts done in their loved one’s name.

Each act of kindness leaves a “lit” virtual candle “burning” on the website.

Visitors to the site can read about the lives of the fallen, what their families and friends said about them, their passions, their personalities, their hopes and aspirations.

To date, some 190 schools, congregations and groups have signed on to the project, and more than 21,000 positive actions have been performed or pledged in soldiers’ memories.

The campaign was initiated by Olami, an organization promoting “Jewish greatness” on campus.

This project is a rare opportunity to honor Israelis who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

We invite you to do something positive – an act of kindness or charity – in honor of Israel’s fallen and heroes.
