The German government has given its green light for the sale of 100 Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine, according to a report from German newspaper Der Spiegel.

The deal is worth 1.7 billion euros, according to the report, which cited a spokesperson from Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), the manufacturer of the howitzer.

It was further said that the company is already manufacturing the howitzers, with deliveries expected to take several years to complete.

It is unclear when the first systems under the contract would be handed over to Ukraine.

Ukraine already has at least 15 of the howitzers on the frontline, after they were donated from Germany and the Netherlands. The two countries initially sent 12 howitzers before promising to send another six units in June this year.

Germany’s defense minister Christine Lambrecht revealed earlier this week that the three additional systems it promised in June had already been delivered.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, defense minister Lambrecht said the Germany had also delivered MARS multiple rocket launchers to Ukraine, while Ukrainian defense minister Oleksii Reznikov said on Monday that the first three Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns (SPAAG) from Germany are already in Ukraine.

The PzH 2000 with a 155mm L52 main gun and a rate of fire of three rounds in 9 seconds is one of the most popular howitzers produced and is in service with eight countries.
