Playback issue on AMD Radeon RX 6800 graphics card

I switched from a GeForce 3070 to a Radeon RX 6800 graphics card on DaVinci Resolve 17 Studio Beta 3 (Windows 10 Pro 20H2 x64). The program does not play or show any picture of a video file alone or on the timeline. When downgrading to DaVinci Resolve Studio 16.2.7 everything works fine. Switching back to 17 Beta 3 results into the same issue again.

Is there any other Radeon RX 6800 user on the forum facing the same issue?

On my pc ( 5900x / rx 6800 ) ,after importing media, thumbnails appear after about 15sec. Clips droped on timeline after 40 sec , then i can play them or use in color tab ( but different tools work with 10 sec to 1 min lag ).

Drivers or just beta ??

AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT graphics card but the same issue.
It works sometimes and sometimes not.
Somtimes it woks when I wait, somtimes when I relink the media, somtimes i need to restart everything.
But till now I see no pattern why it works or why it dosn't work.
No such Issues with Davinci 16.

I can confirm, that changing rx 6800 to rtx 3070 solved thumbnail problem ( tested in beta 4 ) ;). Thumbnails appear fast no matter what kind of files they are, red, braw, arriraw, prores, dnxhd, exr . Everything from HD to 8K works normal .
Same when droping clips in to the timeline - fast with 0 delay on thumbnails and play . Color page alsow
have zero slowdown, when first time using any of tools.
Tested on internal and external drives.

Same issue with my Ryzen 5800X and RX 6800. Plus the AMD (GPU) rendering does not work. It is the same when I choose 'Native' on delivery page.

I'm having the same types of issues with the older RX570 card. But on top of it, Resolve will sometimes just quit. I open the project and leave it to get it's thumbnails in order and come back a few minutes later to find that the program is no longer running. No warning, just all of a sudden gone.

AMD drivers are the latest (as of Jan 2 2021)

The main issue is the AMD GPU but i have no power to get in touch with anybody from AMD to talk about it ...

It's insane that they brag about Ryzen as being great for content creators while their GPU lineup has so many issues with Resolve.

I am finding no fix here so far either. Installed the Adrenalin 2020 Edition 21.1.1 that came yesterday. Also running the latest beta of Davinci Resolve Studio 17, but no improvement as it seems. It is just sad. Any hope from Blackmagic would be nice.

I have gone back to Resolve 16 but there are issues there as well ... It takes about 1 minute for the video thumbnails to show up and while editing at some point you will start to see glitches in the video while playing the cuts you made.

I wonder if anybody at BMD is aware of this issue. Otherwise the card is fine for the software ... it has enough power to playback 4K video with noise reduction real time. It also renders quite fast .. the only issue i have found till now are the ones stated above, which are on another level in Resolve 17 which i find unusable on a Radeon card.

The issues reported by the OP are not specific to AMD GPUs.

I've also observed similar issues on NVIDIA cards when switching to OpenCL.

The culprit here appears to be some bug in the OpenCL implementation.

It looks like this issue is also affecting Macs using OpenCL.

Seems to be some widespread bug related to OpenCL.

I also noticed that the issues differ depending on the codec.

A friend of mine edits MJpeg videos from a Canon 1DX, while he does have issues with loading of the project that takes a lot to process those video thumbnails it doesn't have the issues that i'm facing while editing files from my Sony A7III camera .. and those are video glitches, the frames get tangled up and it looks like it's going forward and backward fast few times after a while when i'm doing my cuts.

NVIDIA cards have CUDA support.
Apple machines have Metal support.

AMD/Intel cards on Windows and Linux only have OpenCL support.

Tested Resolve 17 Beta 8 on Manjaro though it works better than the 17 Beta 8 on Windows, it still stuffers from the same issues that the Windows variant is .. meaning you have to wait till the thumbnails are loaded.

The biggest downside is the lack of hardware acceleration under Linux .. no H264/H265 for some reason... even though free software like KDEnlive have it.

PS: Resolve 16 crashed under Manjaro but Resolve 17 boots ... though i had to create a special shortcut for it to load otherwise it gets stuck on looking for Panels.

Might try this week to see if my old 1080Ti exhibits the same issues under OpenCL .. it might not be the AMD driver but how Resolve works under OpenCL.

The OpenCL issues are not something specific to AMD though.

AMD was only reported because OpenCL is the default option with those cards.

The issues are also exhibited on NVIDIA cards when switching to OpenCL (though the delays seem to have improved as of Beta 8)

My 6800XT runs fine now with the final build. It loads projects instantly and i can edit.

I can confirm with the stable release of DR 17 plus the latest AMD Driver 21.2.3 it does work.
If you miss the latest AMD Driver you will still see the issue happening.

Windows is on 20H2.

Still awful playback for me.
The previous 750 ti had better performance than 6800 xt.
I even re-installed windows but still....
Playback very choppy and gpu seems to ignore Resolve
