Lucifer: Could a move to the BBC work?

The BBC may have thrown their hat into the #SaveLucifer ring, but would a move to the UK broadcasters work?

Lucifer aired it’s season 3 finale last night and understandably everyone wants a season 4. #SaveLucifer had been trending beforehand but the shocking season finale ending created a significant boost.

Tom Ellis has been campaigning hard since the announcement by FOX to cancel the series. He was even live tweeting during the season finale despite being in the UK at the time. However, Ellis being in the UK may have caught the attention of a potential broadcasting network that could possibly come in and #SaveLucifer.

Lucifer and the BBC

The BBC got in touch with Ellis. Explaining that they are monitoring #SaveLucifer closely and would like to interview him about why Lucifer should be saved. Ellis later tweeted that he was traveling back to LA but would be trying to arrange something with the BBC later.

So the questions to ask are: Is the BBC following #SaveLucifer closely because they want a news story or are they potentially interested in picking up the series?

Why a move to the BBC is perfect

Let’s just assume it is the latter because nobody’s interested in a news story. We just want Lucifer to be saved. A move to the BBC initially sounds bizarre, it is a UK network after all, but it is actually a perfect solution.

First of all Lucifer is really popular show in the UK,. It already has an established following so there is no problem about not having enough viewers in the UK.

The BBC already has a string of successful shows in America, Peaky Blinders & Doctor Who for example. Ellis himself has worked with the BBC on a few of their shows as well, so there is already a working relationship.

If it was picked up by the BBC it could still be aired in the states. It could come to either BBC America, like Doctor Who, or go straight to Netflix, like Peaky Blinders.

The BBC would most likely reduce the episode numbers but I would take reduced episode numbers over no episodes any day. Plus it would allow the story to be more focused rather than having the odd stand-alone episode. And without commercials, the episodes would be a full hour, instead of the 40 minutes in the USA.

Lucifer would also have a better chance long-term on the BBC than on another US network. FOX has admitted that the decision to cancel Lucifer was down to the ratings. They weren’t good enough. If Lucifer went to say ABC or NBC ratings will still be a major factor when it comes to being renewed the following year.  Whereas the BBC does not have as much of a big issue with ratings due to the TV license paid to the network. All those in the UK who watch live TV (online or through a TV) legally should pay a TV licensing fee. The BBC doesn’t air commercials because of this.

There will be some cons. A potential move to the UK for the cast and crew may be required. Something that not everyone would be keen on. But the so far, the pros outweigh the cons.
