Hump Day Horror

Patricia Columbo was just 16 years old when she met 36 year old Frank DeLuca.  He managed a pharmacy and she worked at the coffee shop next door.  She went to work for him instead, and they began a sexual relationship. She eventually moved into the home he shared with his wife and 5 kids, before he divorced and they moved into an apartment together.  Patricia's father beat Frank pretty badly over that. Two years later, the pair broke into the Columbo home and murdered her parents as well as her brother, brutally.  She was not initially a suspect, and had hoped to receive inheritance, only to find she had been written out of the will. The police were eventually led to the couple and after they were arrested (05/15/1976), DeLuca's employees revealed they saw him washing and burning bloodstained clothes.  He had apparently threatened them to stay quiet, and even tried to have them killed while he was in jail, but another inmate thwarted the plan. The two were sentenced to 200-30

Winner: Switzerland Ireland got my vote and overall attention.  They came in 6th. Armenia finished 8th. I thought Spain was fun, they placed 22nd. Czechia was not a final qualifier, just out at 27th, but I liked the message of their song.

A cave in Nevada contains massive gypsum glaciers, epsomite and gypsum chandeliers, and crystals the size of cars.  Researchers also discovered a newly identified formation called scabbards - formed in water, these calcium castings are similar to shells but once contained selenite gypsum crystals. These are not known to exist anywhere else in the world. The cave also preserved ancient artifacts from Native Americans, including a torch in the rock and some bits of pottery.  This one still has rope around it to carry. More pictures:

156 years ago, the transcontinental railroad reached Lake's Crossing, where Charles W. Fuller had built a bridge to cross the Truckee River, establishing a connection between Virginia City and the California Trail.  He later sold the property to Myron C. Lake. With the railroad, construction superintendent Charles Crocker decided to name the community after Major General Jesse Lee Reno, a Union officer killed in the Civil War. In 1871, Reno became the county seat for Washoe.  Extension of the railroad in 1872 helped boost the local economy. The University of Nevada was founded in 1874 in Elko, following the Morrill Land Act Grant of 1862.  In 1885, the university was moved to Reno, and Morrill Hall stood alone. The city was incorporated in 1903, and in 1906 became the "Divorce Capital" thanks to the US Steel Corporation president, William Corey. In 1926, the Reno Arch was erected to promote the upcoming Transcontinental Highways Exposition of 1927.  Reno City Council de

I mentioned this place a few years ago, as we drove past following a camp on Walker River. This time we actually stopped and looked around more. We tried the road to Aurora, but it cuts through a canyon and a creek had taken over. NVExpeditions
