Another day, another alleged Destiny 2 leak detailing the game’s spring DLC, now supposedly called “The Fallen Warmind” not “Gods of Mars” because why not.
This one has sprung up on both reddit and the Bungie forums, but fool me twice, shame on you, and all that. I think this is about the third or fourth alleged leak about the expansion, each version a slightly modified version of the last.
This one claims that Rasputin disappears, Ana Bray shows up, a corrupted Warmind is the villain and we learn the truth behind the Collapse. It’s a bit more generic than the past leaks which promised at least mildly interesting things like enemy “Crow Splicers,” but honestly, all of these are probably total BS.
Why?
This one is just a post of screenshots from the Gamestop webpage that claims a listing was “accidentally” put up, though the leaker, a few hours old reddit account, doesn’t even bother putting the link that supposedly led him there in the first place.
It’s a bad idea to believe any leak that comes from screenshots taken of an “accidental” listing on a webpage. Why? Because it is very, very easy to simply edit the code of a page and while not “hack” it, per se, change the code to at least display whatever text you want to see. That can include headlines, like “The Fallen Warmind” or entire descriptions like what we’re seeing here. The last “leak” was similar to this one, although I think it was supposed to be from an Xbox page instead of Gamestop.
If you don’t believe me, a different redditor made their own “leak” in the exact same format, only with total garbage text in place of the actual “description.” It shows how easy this is, and I’ve seen this replicated across other leaks as well, like how at one point Toys R Us supposedly leaked a Game of Thrones title from Bethesda.
The only thing I actually believe about Destiny 2’s spring expansion at this point is that it will take place on Mars and probably involve a Warmind. Everything else, all these little details about Ana Bray and Prince Uldren and totally new enemy types and all that, I’m more skeptical about, given that most were first glimpsed in all these fake leaks.
Given that we’re probably two or so months away from Destiny 2’s second DLC, it might be helpful for Bungie to start talking about it. Two weeks from now is Destiny 2’s big sandbox update, which should hopefully help get the game back on track, but showing off a cool concept and interesting footage from DLC 2 would do more to boost morale of the D2 community than anything. Otherwise, these fake leaks, oftentimes ones that seem more interesting than actual legit content, given the theoretical storylines, just serve to get people’s hopes up for content that doesn’t actually exist.
I would also advise everyone, myself included, now that I’ve learned my lesson, to stop falling for the “accidental listing” leak which is incredibly easy to produce. It’s not just screenshots, you can often create versions of the web page that display this info live, though it’s still fake. Just be careful. Only trust leaks from Jason Schreier.
