Mr Macron’s parents spoke to Anne Fulda, who wrote the book ‘Emmanuel Macron: A Perfect Young Man’, about the shocking love affair that began when Brigitte Trogneux was a 40-year-old married mother-of-three.

The Macrons were under the impression that their son was dating Ms Trogneux’s daughter, Laurence, until a family friend revealed the truth.

After finding out Mr Macron was actually seeing Ms Trogneux, 24 years his elder, they were so shocked they removed him from the school.

Françoise Nogues-Macron, the French president’s mother, told Ms Fulda: “We just couldn’t believe it.

“What is clear is that when Emmanuel met Brigitte, we couldn’t just say ‘That’s great.’”

However, Mrs Nogues-Macron added that what mattered to here was not that her son was in a relationship with Ms Trogneux, but that he was “alive and there weren’t any problems”.

When she realised the relationship was not a fleeting love affair, she is said to have confronted Ms Trogneux by saying: “Don’t you see? You’ve had your life. But he won’t have children with you.”

And Mr Macron’s father, Jean-Michel Macron, said he “almost fell off his chair” when he discovered they were in a relationship.

He said: “When Emmanuel met Brigitte, we certainly did not say ‘How wonderful!’”

Even when they asked Ms Trogneux not to see their son until he had become an adult, the teacher told them she could not “promise anything”.

But of her own mother’s reaction to the affair, Mrs Nouges-Macron said: “My mother, who would need have tolerated such a situation for her own children, showed herself to be much more open and tolerant with regard to her grandchildren’s love affairs.”

The new president was a student in Ms Trogneux’s drama classes, where they became closer when they co-authored a play.

She confided in a friend years later: “The writing became an excuse. I felt that we had always known each other.”

As a former teacher, Ms Trogneux is expected to concentrate on education reform as France’s first lady.
