My new Helios 40, very early version, appears to be in above excellent condition.
I'll have to use aftermarket collar to better secure it to camera.
And a real beauty she is!
Please take some photo's! I just love seeing them.

The Helios-40 n is one of the last remaining Russians to add to my silver collection. Though they're aren't that many in total it's proving to be very difficult(and expensive) to put together full sets(caps, case, hoods etc). It is by far one one of the most enjoyable collections I've been building to date.

+1 for another soviet addict.

I've been using the 44m4 mostly. In the sense that it pretty much now lives on my camera. It seems silly. Like most of you I'm sure we have a collection of pentax 50mm's yet why do I continue to champion this obscure Russian glass? Who knows.

Its fun tho, :P This is Melbourne Harbour, well, the dirty side of the Harbour, if you were to Catch the ferry down to Tasmania you would turn around and walk 10m. This is out looking over Altona and toward Geelong. Think it was about f16, iso100 exif says I used 6s on my k10d. Sounds about right.

Perhaps its the focal length I enjoy on this lens.

VIVA LA REVOLUTION!

Nice shot (& welcome to the forums)! I don't even own any Russian glass, but after lurking here for awhile I can see it's just a matter of time .

So true! :P hahahah I cant even remember why I was looking for one... Oh that's right, I ended up with a Zenit 12, then thought "what the hell is on the front of this thing". And there is something romantic about hand made items from a period in the world I can't really honestly associate with. Its heartening in the same way that takumars were blessed by monks :P That these pieces of glass helped a growing super power of the time. (even if they did copy the Germans :P)

And thanks for the Welcome :P

It actaully looks like the cat is willing the distortion into reality. I love that picture; easily one of my favorite swirly bokeh shots!

I have a noob question: What model Helios (or equivalent) would you recommend for someone just entering the Russian Lenses world? A good "gateway to Helios LBA-Hell" . Looking for decent sharpness & the crazy bokeh. Any recommendations?

Any and all.

They all share the same optical formula, with just a differing in accessories. Being arp blades, style of blades. auto and manual apr settings and differing levels of coating as they got older.. eeer newer and newer.

Get what ever ends up being the cheapest! In my case, it came with a Zenit 12 Attached. Which is a hoot to use in its own right :P
