AMD Threadripper 2990WX Linux Benchmarks: The 32-Core / 64-Thread Beast

While the 2990WX is a workstation processor, when running the ebizzy synthetic server benchmark on the Threadripper 2990WX, its performance potential does remain staggering.... While we won't see Zen+ EPYC CPU upgrades but rather Zen 2 EPYC next year, I can't wait to see the potential for those CPUs on Linux.

The Threadripper 2990WX is capable of compiling the Linux kernel in a mere 32 seconds! That's for a default Linux x86_64 kernel build. I will be playing around with some other RAM and storage options for the 2990WX to see how much tighter I can squeeze those build times, but already 30 seconds is quite impressive for not using ccache or other compiler caching techniques. The Threadripper 2990WX should be very capable as a build box.

The C-Ray and POV-Ray ray-tracers also showed off promising potential for the Threadripper 2990WX and the recent push to make ray-tracing a viable rendering option with today's CPUs and GPUs.

The Primesieve prime number benchmark also was very fast and could take full advantage of the CPU's 64 threads.

It's about time to ramp up the intensity of the Smallpt path tracer test and has certainly improved quite a bit on the CPUs over the past few years.
