WATCH as Lions sensation Aphiwe Odwa Dyantyi talks about his team’s Super Rugby quarterfinal showdown with the Jaguares at Ellis Park on Saturday.

The 23-year-old marvel, who burst onto the scene in the Currie Cup competition last year, felt that his team is well-placed maintain their unbeaten run against their South American rivals.

However, it will require a special team effort

The two teams have met six times in Super Rugby – with the Lions having won three times in Johannesburg and the Jaguares recording three victories in Buenos Aires.

The match average is a 34-32 advantage to the Lions.

For the Lions 2018 may not have been as accurate or impressive as the previous two years, but last week they showed glimpses of the form that saw them reach the Final in 2016 and 2017.

“We did very well [in a 38-12 win against the Bulls] last week, so we have a good platform going into this week,” Dyantyi said.

“I am glad we have a full compliment [of players] to compete in the quarterfinals.”

He said Saturday will not be about individuals, but it will require a team effort.

“The guys on the inside need to do well, the five-second fight at the ruck [must be executed accurately], communication is going to be important.

“It will require a collective effort.”

He also touched on the teams’ two encounters this year.

“[The Jaguares], compared to the first game we played against them [a 47-27 victory at Ellis Park], they have really progressed.”

He said the return match in Argentina, which the Jaguares won 49-35, showed how dangerous they can be.

The East London-born utility back – who is comfortable on the wing and at centre – has had a breakout year.

He made his Springbok debut in the three-Test series against England in June and – despite some defensive frailties – looked at home on the international stage.

“I didn’t expect any of this last year, but I am really enjoying my rugby at the Lions and being part of this family,” he added.
